No. 25 St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball Storms Past (RV) Missouri Western for First NCAA Tournament Win Since 2017-18

Fourth-seeded SCSU beat No. 5 seed Griffons, 83-65, Huskies poured in season high 15 3-pointers
TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 25 St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (26-6, 20-2 NSIC) defeated (RV) Missouri Western (21-12, 12-7 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association), 83-65 in the NCAA Round of 64/Central Regional Quarterfinals on Saturday evening at Lee Arena in Topeka. The fourth-seeded Huskies took down No. 5 seed MoWest, 83-65 for their first NCAA Tournament win since 2017-18 behind a season high 15 three pointers.
The Huskies opened the game on a 10-2 run behind a pair of 3-pointers from junior guard Wyatt Hawks (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and sophomore guard Kynan Philippe (Melbourne, Australia). Hawks added his second triple of the game shortly after to give SCSU a 13-5 lead at the under-16 media timeout. By the under-12, the Griffons had cut their deficit to four, but SCSU used a 16-7 run to take a 31-15 lead into the final media timeout of the first half. The Huskies led by as many as 19 in the first half and went into the break with a 39-24 lead.
Half of the Huskies first half field goals came from behind the arc and SCSU assisted on 10 of its 14 total makes while also outrebounding the Griffons 25-15. Hawks paced the offense with 13 points in 10 minutes on 5-of-8 shooting from the field including a perfect 3-of-3 mark from three-point land. Sophomore guard Luke Winkel (Ankeny, Iowa) also chipped in 10 first half points while sophomore guard Lee Marks III (Chicago, Ill.) grabbed 10 boards in the first 20 minutes of play.
After Missouri West scored the opening basket of the second half, the Huskies used a quick 8-0 run, that included back-to-back triples from junior guard Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.), to push their lead back over 20 points. SCSU led by 23 points at the under-16 and a game high 26 points at the 13:25 mark. MoWest was only able to get within 18 points the remainder of the game as the Huskies shot 8-for-14 from deep and made 8 of their 10 free throw attempts in the second half.

The Huskies advanced to the NCAA Round of 32/Central Region Semifinals for the first time since 2017-18 and will play the No. 8 seed Minnesota Duluth (22-11, 13-9 NSIC) in a rematch of the NSIC Tournament Championship game. - Hawks – 17 points (6-for-11 FG, 3-for-3 3P), five assists and two blocks
- Phillipe – 15 points (6-for-10 FG, 3-for-5 3P) and six rebounds
- Ramlall – 14 points (4-for-6 3P), five rebounds and three assists
- SCSU moved to 1-1 all-time against Missouri Western, 1-1 against MoWest in neutral site games and 1-0 against the Griffons in NCAA Tournament play.
- The Huskies moved to 14-17 (.452) all-time in NCAA Tournament games, 13-15 (.464) in NCAA Regional Tournament games and 9-7 (.563) in first round games in their first NCAA game since 2018-19. It was the program's first NCAA Tournament win since 2017-18.
- SCSU tied its season high mark for 3-pointers (15) and its 53.6% from beyond the arc was the team's second-best performance of the season.
- Winkel led the Huskies in scoring for the 22nd time this season. It was his 13th game of 22+ points this season and his seventh game with 4+ 3-pointers.
- Hawks' three 3-pointers were a new career high. He scored 17+ points for the fifth time this season.
- Philippe notched 15+ points for the fifth time this season and hit 3+ threes for the fourth time.
- Ramlall scored 14+ points for the 10th time this season and third consecutive game. It was his third game this season with 4+ made 3-pointers.
- Marks neared a double-double with eight points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He led the Huskies in rebounding for the sixth time this season.
- Junior guard Nate Dahl (Buffalo, Minn.) stuffed the stat sheet with five points, six rebounds and three steals. He nabbed 3+ steals for the third time this season.
