St. Cloud State University men's hockey (11-12-4, 8-9-0 NCHC) scored a huge 3-2 overtime victory at Colorado College (8-16-1, 3-13-1 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 7 at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Senior captain Jack Ahcan played a pivotal role in the victory as he scored his 99th career point as a Husky with the overtime game winner at :31 with assists from Nick Poehling and Micah Miller. This was Ahcan's sixth goal of the season and his 20th career goal. He also had an assist earlier in the game, which pushes his career total to 79 assists...just one point shy of joining SCSU's 100-point. If he surpasses that total, Ahcan will become just the third defenseman in team history to score 100-plus points in his collegiate career.
After a scoreless first period, Colorado College took command of the contest by scoring back-to-back goals to gain a 2-0 lead. Bryan Yoon opened the game with a goal at 2:11 before a breakaway rush by Chris Wilkie at 8:47 of the second made it a two-goal lead for the Tigers.
The Huskies responded quickly with a goal by Chase Brand at 9:38 of the second period. He was assisted on the play by Ahcan and Nick Perbix, which was Brand's sixth goal of his rookie campaign. The game tying goal was then added by Jack Poehling at 12:18 of the second period with helpers from Nick Poehling and Micah Miller. This was Jack Poehling's sixth goal of 2019-20 and his 27 goal with the Huskies.
This marked the second overtime victory for the Huskies in 2019-20 and it moved SCSU into lone possession of fifth place in the always rugged NCHC with 24 points (three ahead of Omaha's 21 points).
In the nets, Hrenak had 22 saves for SCSU and earned his 10th victory of 2019-20. SCSU outshot the Tigers 34-24 in the contest and the Huskies were 0-3 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill, including a key penalty kill in the final two minutes of regulation.
SCSU and CC will finish their weekend series at the World Arena on Saturday, Feb. 8 with a 7:07 p.m. start in Colorado Springs, Colo. Fans can listen to the game on The River 96.7 FM and watch the game on NCHC.tv/scsu
