ST. CLOUD, MINN. - St. Cloud State University men's hockey junior goalie David Hrenak and women's basketball senior guard Madelin Dammann have been selected as a Wolters Kluwer St. Cloud State Athlete of the Month for February 2020.
Hrenak backstopped St. Cloud State to a second-half turnaround, leading the Huskies (and himself) to a 4-1-2 record in the month, including wins over then-No. 1 North Dakota and No. 6 Denver. The Los Angeles Kings draft pick led the NCHC with a .937 save percentage in February, ranking ninth nationally, while his 1.84 goals-against average was second in the conference during the month and 13th in the NCAA. Hrenak recorded four games with at least 30 saves in February.
Hrenak opened February with his second shutout of the season, turning aside all 18 shots he faced on Feb. 1 in a 3-0 win over Miami. It was his ninth career shutout, tying the program record. The following weekend he totaled 53 saves in a win and tie, both in overtime, at Colorado College, while allowing only two goals each night. On Feb. 21, Hrenak made a month-high 32 saves in a 3-3 overtime tie with then-No. 1 UND, and also made a stop in the shootout to earn SCSU an extra conference point. He then made 29 saves in a 2-1, series-finale win over the Fighting Hawks to nab NCHC Goaltender of the Month. Hrenak wrapped up his month by stopping 31 shots each night in a split with Denver.
Hrenak racked up 194 saves in February, which was third in the NCHC, on 207 shots faced. His four wins in the month tied for second in the NCHC, while his .714 win percentage was second by itself. For his effort in February, Hrenak was named the NCHC Goaltender of the Month for February 2020.
Dammann had a spectacular month of February, leading the Huskies women's basketball team to its best overall and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) record since rejoining the conference in 2008-09. Thanks to Dammann's outstanding play, St. Cloud State ended the regular season with a 19-7 overall record and a 16-6 mark in NSIC play, allowing the Huskies to earn the No. 2 seed in the North during the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament. Additionally, St. Cloud State earned its first NCAA Central Regional Ranking in 10+ years in February thanks to the team's 10-game win streak and third place finish in the overall conference standings.
Dammann averaged a team-leading 16.1 points per game during the month of February, scoring in double figures in seven of the Huskies eight games during the month. She scored at least 15 points in six of the eight games and scored 20+ in three games during the final month of the regular season. The senior additionally shot .506 from the floor and an impressive .444 mark from three-point range, moving to first all-time in career three-point shooting percentage and top-10 all-time in three-pointers made and three-point field goals attempted.
Dammann earned plenty of recognition in February, as she earned All-NSIC honors for the first time in her career midway through the month. Thanks to her consistent play, Dammann was named First Team All-Conference after averaging 13.5 point per game against NSIC opponents while shooting .466 from the floor and .407 from beyond the arc in NSIC games.
