SCSU swimmers and divers earn All-America honors on first day in Ohio

The St. Cloud State University women's and men's swimming and diving teams opened up action at the 2020 NCAA Division II championships on Wednesday, March 11 in at the Spire Institute Aquatic Center in Geneva, Ohio. The Huskies claimed All-America honors in the men's 50 freestyle, the women's 200 medley relay and the women's 3-meter diving.
In the team standings, SCSU women's team ranked 11th with a total of 34 points and the men's team ranked 21st in the team standings with two points.
SCSU rookie Abe Townley turned in a sterling performance in the 50 freestyle on March 11. He gained All-America honors with a 15th place time of 20.44 and also set a new SCSU team record in the event with a time of 20.00 in the morning prelims.
The Huskies also added an All-America award in the women's 200 medley relay with a 14th place finish in the event. The foursome of Marena Kouba, Alexis Burroughs, Kasey Milstroh and Chelsea Gehrke charted a time of 1:42.88 in the evening finals. In the prelims, SCSU notched a time of 1:42.64, which is the second best time in this event in the SCSU recordbook.
In the women's 50 freestyle, Gerhke posted a time of 23.50 to place 24th in the event and Milstroh placed 42nd at 23.98.
St. Cloud State gained All-America finishes in the 3-meter diving event from Madison Brinkman, Rebekah Stone, Meredith Matchinsky and Alyssa Doherty. Brinkman led the Huskies on the day with an eighth place finish. In the evening finals, Brinkman posted a score of 386.45 and had a prelims score of 414.05. Stone placed ninth for the Huskies with a prelims score of 409.05 and Matchinsky was 10th at 398.00. Doherty completed the field for SCSU with a 16th place score of 364.55.
The Huskies will continue their stay at the NCAA finals with competition on March 12 in the women's 200 free relay, women's 100 butterfly and the women's 200 freestyle.
