Game Notes
St. Cloud State women's hockey (2-7-0, 2-7-0 WCHA) will continue their five-game homestand this weekend with a two-game series against Bemidji State (1-6-1, 1-6-1 WCHA) on January 15 and 16 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Friday's puck drop is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. CST while Saturday's contest will begin at 3:07 p.m. CST.
Bemidji State leads the all-time series with a 48-40-9 record. This is the second meeting between the Huskies and Beavers in 2020-21. SCSU split their first half finale road series in Bemidji on December 10-11. The Huskies won 3-2 in overtime on the 10th, then fell by the same score in OT on the 11th. Freshman Emma Gentry and junior Jenniina Nylund each posted a three-point series with two goals and an assist while Gentry scored the overtime winner on the 10th.
Scouting the Huskies
St. Cloud State currently stands at 2-7-0 on the season, equaling their WCHA win total from a year ago. The Huskies were swept in three games last weekend at the hands of No. 2 Minnesota, falling 2-1 on Thursday, 4-1 Saturday and 4-0 Sunday. Olivia Cvar and Laura Kluge ach scored a goal in the series, while Sanni Ahola posted a .932 save percentage and a 2.40 goals against average in two games played. SCSU scored their first power play goal of the season on January 7 against the Gophers. Cvar's second-period tally also marked the first (and thus far only) penalty kill goal that Minnesota has allowed in 2020-21. St. Cloud State's penalty kill shut out Minnesota's eight chances over the weekend and has killed an impressive 26-of-27 power plays (96.3%) through the season's first nine games. The Huskies' PK ranks 3rd in the country in success rate. Gentry scored her first collegiate goal with an overtime winner and earned WCHA Rookie of the Week honors on December 15 for her performance in the Huskies' last series against BSU. Playing as a wing on the Huskies' second line against Bemidji State, Gentry was a plus-four with two goals and an assist. Nylund currently leads the Huskies with three goals and six points and is tied with Klara Hymlarova for the team lead in assists with three.
Scouting the Beavers
Bemidji State enters this weekend's series losers of five straight, having been swept by No. 3/4 Ohio State and Minnesota State following a split with the latter program. BSU has failed to score more than one goal in each of their past four games. Senior forward Clair DeGeorge leads the Beavers with seven points on three goals and four assists. Sophomore forward Reece Hunt, a member of the 2019-20 All-WCHA Rookie Team, holds the team lead with six assists.
