SCSU squares off with No. 3 Gophers in home-and-home series

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Hockey returns to action this weekend with a home-and-home series against No. 3 Minnesota, welcoming the Gophers to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Friday before traveling to Ridder Arena for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Face-Off Classic. Friday's puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CST while Saturday's finale will begin at 3:00 p.m. CST
Coverage of the series can be heard on the KVSC Sports Stream. The series will also be streamed on B1G+ for subscribers. Following Friday's opener at the HBNHC, the Huskies will meet fans in the concourse for an autograph session. Saturday's U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Face-Off Classic at Ridder Arena will feature guest appearances by Paul Molitor, Kent Hrbek, John Anderson, Chris Engler, state senator Dave Tomassoni as well as recognition for U.S. Hockey Hall of Famers in attendance. SCSU and the Gophers have squared off twice before in the Hall of Fame Game, first in November 2014 then again in December 2015.
The Huskies swept RV Minnesota State over November 5-6, outscoring their rivals 7-3 with an overtime win for a five-point conference weekend. Sanni Ahola had a marvelous showing against the Mavericks, stopping 74 shots with a .961 save percentage. Sophomore center Mackenzie Bourgerie earned her first-ever WCHA Forward of the Week honor by going 2-2-4 and anchoring the top line. St. Cloud State is set to return junior forward Klara Hymlarova after she helped the Czech Republic to their first-ever Olympics bid by winning the Olympic Qualifying last weekend. Freshman Dayle Ross ranks fourth among all WCHA players with 23 blocks, while Jenniina Nylund sits top-ten in faceoff wins.
No. 3 Minnesota enters the series winners of eight straight including a road sweep of then-No. 3 Colgate. Last weekend the Gophers swept RIT at Ridder, outscoring their nonconference foe 17-1. Currently third in the WCHA with 17 points, Minnesota landed third in both the USCHO and USA Today polls this week. Taylor Heise the way in goals and assists for a 9-12-21 line as the point leader, followed by Amy Potomak (7) and Abigail Boreen (6) in the goal-scoring department. Peyton Hemp has added 10 assists while Boreen owns eight helpers. Makayla Pahl (4-0-0, 1.61 GAA, .914 SV%), Lauren Bench (3-2-0, 2.43 GAA, .904 SV%) and Skylar Vetter (2-1-0, 2.25 GAA, .897 SV%) have shared the majority of the goaltending duties.
The Huskies next travel to Troy, New York for a Thanksgiving week nonconference series at RPI.
