
Records continue to fall on day 3 at GLIAC

HOLLAND, MICH. - The St. Cloud State University men's swim and dive team once again had a record breaking day at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic COnference (GLIAC) Swimming and Diving Championship. After seeing records fall on both Wednesday and Thursday, the Huskies once again witnessed a record breaking performance on Friday, as they held steady in fourth as a team with 309.5 total points.
Raf Hendricks (Berg en Terblijt, Netherlands / Stella Maris College) provided the Friday night fireworks, as he broke yet another school record, his second at the GLIAC Swimming and Diving championships. After clocking an impressive time of 49.39 in the 100 yard backstroke prelims, the freshman phenom was even faster in finals, breaking the school record with a school record breaking time of 49.01. The time was also good enough for a third place finish as an individual, helping Hendricks garner his second All-Conference honor of the week.
Three other St. Cloud State swimmers scored in the 100 yard backstroke, including Charlie Koebele (Bismarck, N.D. / St. Mary's Central), Jacob Swier (Parker, Colorado / Chaparral) and Nick Gehling (Cedar Falls, Iowa). Koebele clocked a ninth place finish with his time of 50.85, while Swier finished 13th with a time of 51.99. Gehling rounded out the top-16 performances, as he finished in 16th with a time of 53.20.
The Huskies scored in four other events Friday evening, including the 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard breaststroke, 200 yard butterfly and 800 freestyle relay. David Clossey (Ramsey, Minn. / Anoka) was the lone swimmer to score in the 500 yard freestyle, as he came in 13th with a time of 4:44.29, while Jayden Porter (Bismarck, N.D. / Century) finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.15. Their teammate Payton Rudeen (Rothschild, Wis. / D.C. Everest) also scored points for St. Cloud State, as he came in 16th with a time of 59.88.
Two Huskies, Andres Hernandez Garcia (Barcelona, Spain / Escola Ipsi) and Garrett Alleven (Marion, Kansas) scored in the 200 fly. Hernandez Garcia finished in 10th with a time of 1:54.47, while Alleven clocked a 12th place finish with a time of 1:55.35.
St. Cloud State placed fifth in the final event of the evening: the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Swier, Jonah Schedin (Snohomish, Washington) Parker Kabe (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo) and Clossey clocked a time of 7:02.03 to conclude the Huskies day with a fifth place finish in the race.
Thanks to these and several other strong performances, St. Cloud State finished the day with a three-day score of 309.5. The Huskies will return for the final day of the GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, February 20, with prelims set to begin at 9:15 a.m.
