St. Cloud State falls 5-1 in Saturday finale as Grace Wolfe scores lone Huskies goal
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – (RV) St. Cloud State Women's Hockey dropped their series finale 5-1 to No. 7/8 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The Huskies were outshot 25-19, again holding Minnesota Duluth to their second-lowest shot total of the year. 18 of SCSU's shots came in the final two periods with nine SOG per frame.
UMD scored their first goal with just under three minutes to play in the opening period and added two more in the second and third. St. Cloud State's lone goal came with under a minute to go in the game as Grace Wolfe threw a puck home from the high left point through a screen for her first collegiate strike.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"Development isn't a straight line. This was going to happen at some point – we weren't going to win out. I thought we felt pretty good about ourselves after Monday, we talked about it then and we talked about it now. Not everything was perfect when we beat Minnesota. Not everything goes wrong because we lost to UMD. We still have things to work on. The message was every weekend and every game, we need kids involved and competing. We can't have passengers. We just don't have enough depth for that. We need everybody going every game, or it's going to be really, really hard for us. Today I felt like we had just a few too many passengers."
On pulling the goaltender early in the third… "There are a few factors to that. I've probably done that most of my career. Number one, I don't like being shut out. That's a mentality team-wise that we have to have, that we're going to try to win, fight, scratch all throughout the game. We're not going to give up and we're going to just keep going. Also, to get some 6-on-5 and have opportunities to get that work in live with an extra attacker for the power play and other game scenarios, that's priceless when it comes to playoff time. To already have some of that experience in your back pocket when you need it most. It's amazing when there's no goalie behind you to bail you out how much harder people skate and compete. They have to understand that we need that mentality, that compete, that drive and that desperation 5-on-5 with a goalie. You can't just pull that out. Mentally you have to do whatever you need to do to summon that up at the start of the game with a goaltender in."
On battling Minnesota Duluth… "We knew that there was going to be some challenges posed by their defense because they're so athletic, they push you and jump up in transition. They're very athletic in the offensive zone. That posed some problems for us, even more so on the big sheet. Short turnround, we tried to just keep playing the way we were playing – but it's a perpetual work-in-progress."
"We go back to the drawing board and work hard next week. It's an off week, well-deserved after the grind of the early season. It will be nice to rest. We talked about finishing the rest of the first half well and making sure we're not too high or too low."
