Last Time Out
St. Cloud State dropped their series finale 5-1 to No. 7/8 Minnesota Duluth at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on November 12. The Huskies were outshot 25-19, again holding Minnesota Duluth to their second-lowest shot total of the year. 18 of SCSU's shots came in the final two periods with nine SOG per frame. UMD scored their first goal with just under three minutes to play in the opening period and added two more in the second and third. St. Cloud State's lone goal came with under a minute to go in the game as Grace Wolfe threw a puck home from the high left point through a screen for her first collegiate strike.
Huskies Primer
SCSU enters the series 7-8-0 with a 4-8-0 mark in WCHA action, well-rested following an off weekend. Jenniina Nylund (7-8-15), Klára Hymlárová (8-4-12), Emma Gentry (8-2-10) and Taylor Lind (2-7-9) headline a dangerous Huskies top-six while Dayle Ross (0-6-6, 29 BLK), Grace Wolfe (1-5-6, 25 BLK), Regan Bulger (0-1-1, 37 BLK) and Taytum Geier (1-1-2, 28 BLK) have anchored the defensive corps. JoJo Chobak (3-3-0, .932 SV%, 2.09 GAA) and Sanni Ahola (4-5-0, .920 SV%, 2.32 GAA) have become one of the top goaltending duos in the league. In nonconference games this season, the Huskies have outscored their opponents 12-3 with a signature win over No. 1 Minnesota.
Series History
The weekend's series will be the 18th and 19th all-time meeting between the two schools, with SCSU owning a 13-2-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Huskies haven't lost to the Lions since November 10, 2018 in Wenztville. Lindenwood's last win over St. Cloud State came despite a vintage Janine Alder performance in goal, as the Huskies' Olympian stopped 40 of 42 shots faced before Kirsten Martin scored the game-winner in OT. Last season the Huskies swept Lindenwood in their season-opening series at St. Cloud behind a stellar weekend from Taylor Lind (1-3-4) as the then-junior had a three-assist game on Opening Night.
Points on Points
Senior center Jenniina Nylund enters the weekend 14th all-time on the program's scoring list, sitting two points from passing Laura Fast. Nylund is five points away from entering the Huskies' top-10 and currently ranks third in the WCHA with seven goals this season.
Getting Gritty
Remaining true to the team's newfound identity, the grind-and-grit Huskies have four players found among the WCHA's top-10 leaders in blocked shots. True freshman Regan Bulger leads the league with 37 blocks while Dayle Ross is third with 29 and Taytum Geier's 28 have her tied for fourth. Grace Wolfe is tied for seventh with 25 blocked shots this season. As a team, St. Cloud State has 225 blocks – good for 15.00 per game – which lands them second in both categories.
Special Teams Stonewallers
St. Cloud State's penalty kill has been stellar this season, ranking second in the league and 14th nationally at 87.0%. The Huskies share the WCHA lead in penalties taken – 58 – with Bemidji State but pace the league in the per-game rate, taking nearly four trips to the box per night.
Powering Up
The Huskies complement their strong PK with a dynamic power play that presently ranks ninth in the country at 22.5%. Emma Gentry and Klára Hymlárová each have scored three times on the advantage, tying them for 10th in the NCAA.
Looking at the Leaderboards
Many Huskies can be found across the WCHA statistical leaders entering the holidays. Emma Gentry and Klára Hymlárová are tied for fifth in goals scored (8) while Jenniina Nylund's three game-winning goals have her sharing second. Hymlárová is seventh in shooting percentage at 24% while she and Nylund are eighth and ninth in facoff wins with 116 and 108 respectively.
Stellar Stoppers
Goaltenders JoJo Chobak and Sanni Ahola have combined to provide SCSU with a phenomenal pairing, currently leading the team to rank third in the WCHA with a .921 save percentage. Chobak is third across the league with a .932 save rate while Ahola ranks fifth at .920. Nationally, Chobak is 16th and Ahola is 26th.
Regan the Rookie
Freshman defender Regan Bulger was named WCHA Rookie of the Week by the league office following the Huskies' last series. Bulger led the conference with 15 blocks over the course of three games, recording five blocks in each of the three contests. She skated to a plus-one while anchoring the Huskies' blueline, recording nine more blocks than the next-most productive league skater. SCSU upset No. 1 Minnesota on Monday evening then held No. 7/8 Minnesota Duluth to their second-lowest shots on goal total of the season.
