Second-period surge dooms St. Cloud State in 9-0 loss
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 14 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey dropped a 9-0 finale to No. 4/6 Minnesota on Saturday evening at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Minnesota took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, scored five times in the second and added three more in the third to account for their offensive outburst.
On a night where the banged-up Huskies spent most of their time in the defensive zone, Dayle Ross led all skaters with six blocks, Grace Wolfe and Taytum Geier added five while Regan Bulger posted four and skated even in the plus/minus. Lauren Tuzik blocked three shots as SCSU racked up 27 on the night.
Closing the first half at 11-10-0, the Huskies have recorded their winningest first half in program history and just their second double-digit win mark at the break. SCSU's first half winning percentage of .524 trails only 2007-08 (.556) and marks the second time the program has entered the break at .500 or better.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"Obviously, a tough way to go into the break. Not the best outcome. Compete-wise, I thought we tried, but we were just overmatched all weekend. Tip your hat to Minnesota – they played hard, they competed, they're very talented and skilled and have a super good club."
"I understand this process. There will be peaks and valleys – you just have to fight through the adversity. Our D-corps is banged up. We're limping into the break – it comes at a good time for us. Let's be honest. Their best kids took it upon themselves to not lose to us again. Zumwinkle and Heise carrying the pail for that team – they are super dangerous."
"Coming into the weekend, our power play and penalty kill were top-10 in the country. Considering where some of those things have been in the past, that's huge for us. Being able to grind out 11 wins – that's big for us. That's one of the better starts in program history. I think the buy-in, the compete has improved, but it needs to keep getting better. There's a fair amount of positives to where we're at, having career years for some of our top players – we have a lot more work to do, and I'm fine with that. We got a good taste of what it looks like, we got a highly-motivated team in the Gophers these past two games – that's a pretty big learning experience for our young players to see what it looks like and where we need to go."
Notables
The Huskies close the first half at 11-10-0 with a 6-10-0 mark in WCHA play, returning to action in early January with the East/West Classic in Minneapolis.
