Nine former SCSU student-athletes honored as Tournament MVP’s
Faribault, Minn. – Nine St. Cloud State Baseball alumni were honored by the Minnesota Baseball Association Tournament hosts at the MVP Banquet in Faribault on Thursday. Jim Eisenreich, Joe Harmala, Dave Ditty, John Dolan, Rod Schafer, Matt Butala, Andy Bulson, Nate Hammes and Sean Borman each were recognized as former State Tournament Most Valuable Players. Eisenreich served as a guest speaker at the banquet.
"My first memories of the state tourney were with my dad as a six-year-old," said SCSU head coach Pat Dolan, "In addition to so many great memories over the years playing amateur ball with Cold Spring. I'm so proud of the success both the Springers and Rockies have had with both teams again qualifying for the state tournament. To see so many of the former Huskies greats playing each year is amazing!"
Harmala earned Tournament MVP with Dassel-Cokato in 1968, followed by Eisenreich taking honors in 1983 with the St. Cloud Saints. Butala was the 1986 MVP with Cold Spring, Schafer took the MVP in 1987 with Hamel then Ditty picked up MVP honors in 1988 for Delano.
"I'd like to personally thank Joe Harmala for giving me an 0-for-5 as a 55-year-old pitcher when I got done playing college ball," Dolan continued, "And all of the other Husky MVPs that I've developed great friendships with like Dave Ditty, John Dolan, Andy Bulson and Rod Schaefer. It was certainly special to see two of my former players – Nate Hammes and Sean Borman – earn MVP honors!"
John Dolan was named MVP in 1994 with Jordan. Bulson garnered honors in both 2000 and 2001 with Cold Spring. Rounding out the Huskies' representatives, Hammes earned MVP honors in 2017 with Miesville and Borman was 2019 Tournament MVP with the Minneapolis Cobras.
Over 50 former and current Huskies Baseball student-athletes participated in the MBA State Tournament last season. The 2022 Tournament is hosted by Fairbault, Dundas and Miesville with games beginning Friday, August 19.
