Huskies host top NSIC South Vikings
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's basketball team gears up to host the last two NSIC South opponents this weekend at Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies will host Augustana Friday, Jan. 27 and Wayne State Saturday, Jan. 28.

Friday's game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. while Saturday's game is set for 5:30 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall. The NSIC Network will provide the game streams while Steve Linzmeier, the Voice of Huskies Basketball, will provide live audio coverage on the Varsity Network App. Live stats will be available on the SCSU women's basketball schedule page.

A Look Back
Last weekend the Huskies traveled to Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls and came home with a weekend sweep. Against SMSU, St. Cloud opened up the game on a 10-2 run until the Mustangs outscored SCSU to lead 16-15 after one. The Huskies would take the lead back in the second period and a last second layup by Katrina Theis gave SCSU a 36-27 lead at halftime. During the third period, the Mustangs would go on a 14-0 run to take over the lead 41-36. From there it was a slow go for the Huskies as they only took over the lead twice by one point despite out scoring SMSU 10-7 as SCSU trailed 48-46 going into the fourth. At the 8:40 mark of the fourth, Theis would score her 1,000th career point which put the Huskies back on top 50-48. From there it was a fight for each time to hold the lead until it was tied up 59 to end regulation. The Huskies went into overtime for the first time since the 2020-21 season. St. Cloud would dominate the extra five minutes as they shut out the Mustangs 11-0 to bring home a 70-59 victory.

Against Sioux Falls, it was a close contest during the first period as each team tried to secure the lead. The Huskies would lead 15-14 after one period of play. During the second, St. Cloud would outscore USF 13-7 to lead 28-21 at half. Back on the court for the third, the Huskies would go up by seven until USF would go on an 8-0 run to lead 31-30 over SCSU. The Huskies would respond by going on a 9-2 run to end the third up 42-33. St. Cloud dominated the fourth period outscoring the Cougars 19-9 holding USF to a .273 from the field. SCSU held a 21-point lead with 42 seconds left to seal the game and close out the night with a 61-42 victory.

Milestone Moment
Fifth-year senior forward Katrina Theis hit a career milestone last Friday (Jan. 20) evening at Southwest Minnesota State. Theis scored her 1,000th career point which put the Huskies back in the lead over the Mustangs. The fifth-year forward became the 35th Husky to hit the 1,000-point career milestone.

St. Cloud enters the weekend 14-4 overall and 11-3 in conference. The Huskies sit second in the NSIC North and fourth overall in the conference standings. SCSU is three games behind Minnesota Duluth who holds a perfect conference record of 14-0.

The Huskies are sitting strong with the number two scoring defense in the NSIC surrendering 56.3 points to opponents. St. Cloud has an assist/turnover ratio of 1.14 which is the best in the NSIC. Katrina Theis leads the Huskies in scoring averaging 17.7 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game. Theis is second in the NSIC for field goal percentage with a .559, third for scoring with 17.7 ppg, and fifth for rebounding. Jada Eggebrecht averages 12.8 points per game for the Huskies while Tori Peschel averages 8.5 rebounds per game which places her third in the NSIC for rebounding. Additionally, Peschel has the best assist/turnover ratio in the conference with a 2.7.Â

Augustana enters the weekend 17-3 overall and 11-3 in conference. The Vikings are first in the NSIC South and second overall in the conference standings. Augustana is on a five-game winning streak and swept Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State last weekend. Augustana has the second-best scoring offense averaging 76.3 points per game while their defense is third surrendering 60.3 points to opponents. The Vikings are led by senior forward Aislinn Duffy who is averaging 16.2 points per game and 8.0 rebounds. Duffy is third in the NSIC for field goal percentage at .524, fifth in scoring, and sixth for rebounding.

Wayne State Wildcats
Wayne State enters the weekend 10-8 overall and 6-8 in conference. WSC sits fourth in the South Division and ninth overall in the conference standings. The Wildcats split last weekend beating Bemidji State while falling to Minnesota Crookston. Senior point guard Lauren Zacharias leads the Wildcats averaging 16.1 points per game and 5.0 rebounds. Additionally, Zacharias is sixth in the NSIC for scoring. Senior forward Kassidy Pingel averages 10.2 points per game and 3.2 rebounds.
