Huskies go 2-0 at East/West Showcase to improve to 13-10-0
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – No. 14/15 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey closed out a strong weekend at the East/West Showcase with a 3-1 win over Merrimack on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena. Klára Hymlárová scored twice on the power play for SCSU while Sanni Ahola made 17 saves in goal as the Huskies opened the second half with their second straight win.
Following a scoreless first period and a half, Hymlárová found the back of the net on a power play as she knifed through the defense, ripping home a shot from the right circle 13 minutes into the second. Moments later, Addi Scribner took the puck off the faceoff and skated to the low left circle, firing a wrister then sending her own rebound back in to make it 2-0 Huskies in a 12 second span.
Hymlárová would score once more on the power play late in the second, sending the Huskies to the second intermission up 3-0. Merrimack finally snuck one through on a power play with just under three minutes to play in the third but SCSU stood tall the rest of the way, sealing the 3-1 win.
Ahola's 17 saves on 18 shots earned her win No. 7 of 2022-23, moving her into 10th on the Huskies' single-season leaderboard.
The Huskies went 2-for-6 on the power play against Merrimack while the kill was 3-for-4. St. Cloud State outshot the Warriors 32-18 on the night.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"Overall, I'm happy with the first weekend back. Any time you can win a couple games out of the chute it helps set the tone for the second half. We had contributions up and down the lineup and we were solid all the way around."
"I thought Sanni was really good. We had a five-minute there, 0-0 in the second period, I thought she made some big timely saves to keep it at zeroes until we got ourselves going. Super disappointed that we didn't pull through and get the shutout for her, I thought she deserved it. She played super well and did a good job for us."
"We talked about going back to our identity in who we are and what gave us success in the first half – that's being hard to play against, defending well, being opportunistic at the offensive end and our special teams has to be super good. I thought our penalty kill was terrific, our power play was good, we got some great goaltending from both players and I thought we defended well. We're getting back to the details of our game that need to be good for us to be successful."
