St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball Hosts Michigan Tech in Midweek Tilt

Huskies look to bounce back after first loss of the season on Saturday
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (2-1, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) returns to Halenbeck Hall for another nonconference game on Tuesday night when it welcomes Michigan Tech (1-2, 0-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). The game will tip-off at 6 p.m. CT.
The 2018-2019 season was the last time the Huskies started 3-1 or better in their first 4-games. In that season, the Huskies would go on to win 22 games and reach the NCAA Division II Tournament.

LAST TIME OUT
In the Huskies home opener on Saturday, they suffered their first loss of the season when they fell to Minnesota State Mankato, 78-61.
Mankato set the tone early as they burst out of the gates with a 12-3 advantage. The Huskies would trail by as many as 12 points in the 1st half, but freshman Wyatt Hawks (White Bear Lake, Minn.) provided a spark off the bench with six points to cut the deficit to six going into halftime. The Mavericks surged out of halftime with seven quick points by Malik Willingham and would never look back. St. Cloud State would trail by nine or more points the rest of the 2nd half as Mankato earned a comfortable 17-point victory to give the Huskies their first loss of the season.
Hawks and graduate student Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis.) would lead the Huskies in scoring with 10 points each and they both grabbed four rebounds and recorded a steal. Freshman Jamiir Allen (Milwaukee, Wis.) would pour in nine points off the bench, which marked a career high. Freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia), the Huskies leading scorer at 17.5 points per game heading into the matchup, was held to seven points but still snatched six rebounds and captured two steals.
SERIES HISTORY | BATTLE OF THE HUSKIES
Tuesday's matchup against Michigan Tech will mark the 55th meeting between the programs with St. Cloud State leading the series 38-17. In last year's matchup, SCSU would capture a 74-56 victory for their third win of the season. Luke Taylor led the Huskies with 18 points, seven rebounds, one block and two made three pointers. Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) torched MTU with 17 points on 7-11 shooting while cashing in three of his five three-point attempts.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN TECH
Michigan Tech comes into Halenbeck Hall posting a record of 1-2 after picking up an 83-75 victory over Missouri-St. Louis in their last outing on Saturday.
Sophomore guard Marcus Tomashek posted a career high 33 points and drained six three-pointers in 32 minutes of play. Tomashek has been blistering hot for the Huskies – he averages 27 points per game on 52.9% from the field, 40.7% from three-point range, and 88.9% from the free throw line. He has also chipped in 4.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1 steal. Tomashek was named GLIAC Player of the Week for his career-bestperformance.
Sophomore guard Dan Gherezgher returns to Michigan Tech after putting up 11.5 points per game in last year's campaign. Gherezgher's only appearance of the season came in Saturday's victory where he put up 11-points on 50% shooting with three made three-pointers. Ghereznger only played 16 minutes in his return.
Tomashek and Gherezgher were thorns in the Huskies side in the matchup last year. Tomashek dropped 20-points, six rebounds and a steal while cashing six three pointers. Gherezgher poured in 13 points off the bench on 6-11 shooting with four rebounds and four assists.
Head Coach Josh Buettner heads into his third season at Michigan Tech. After posting a strong 21-7 record in his first year, the Huskies met the median in his 2nd season as they went 10-20 on the year. Despite only two seasons under his belt, Buettner is third in program history in winning percentage (.534%).
RELIABLE REBOUNDING
Rebounding margin will be a big determining factor in this matchup. St. Cloud State is one of the top rebounding teams in the NSIC as they average 38.7 rebounds per game. SCSU is second in the NSIC with 13.7 offensive rebounds per game and has a rebounding margin of +8.3 which is good for 5th in the conference. Michigan Tech does not possess the same rebounding prowess as St. Cloud State. Michigan Tech posts 34.3 rebounds per game while having a rebound margin of -2.3. St. Cloud State has averaged 10.3 second chance points in their 3-games this season and will look to clean up the glass once again.
SHINING STAR
St. Cloud State freshman guard Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) was named to the NSIC Men's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office after the first week of action for his efforts in his first two collegiate games. He averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in just 24.5 minutes per game during the 2-0 weekend for the Huskies in Kansas City. He shot 68.4% (13-of-19) from the field and 57.1% (4-of-7) from behind the three-point line over the weekend. In his collegiate debut on Friday, he erupted for 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in an 80-73 win over Pittsburg State. In just his second collegiate game ever, he recorded his first career double-double (10 points and 11 rebounds) in a 74-64 win over Henderson State.
HUSKIES HOOPS PREVIEW
Head coach Quincy Henderson enters his second season at the helm of the SCSU Men's Basketball Program. The Huskies finished Henderson's first season with a 10-18 (7-15 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) record finishing fifth in the North Division and tied for 12th overall. The Huskies were picked to finish 14th in the 2023-24 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Coaches' Poll and graduate student guard Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis.) was named the preseason player to watch by the NSIC.
"I am excited about the growth potential of this young group," said Henderson, "We likely have the youngest team in Division 2 this year, and so development will be key. The NSIC is an incredibly competitive league, and our resiliency will be tested. I am optimistic about the future of this group and the direction we are headed."
Taylor returns to SCSU for his graduate year after starting every game last season. He played 24.0 minutes per game while averaging 12.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game shooting 45.2% from the field, 31.3% from three and 77.5% from the charity stripe. He ranked first on the team in field goals made (137), field goals attempted (303), offensive rebounds (32) and total rebounds (130) and second in free throws made (62), free throws attempted (80), total points (357).
"Luke had a tremendous finish to the 2023 season," said Henderson, "His on-court progression has been fun to watch, and his work ethic has been impeccable. He received the Myles Brand award for academic excellence a season ago. He is an exemplary student and citizen. We are fortunate to have him back in his grad year and look forward to his continued contributions to the program."
SCSU returns one graduate student - Taylor, two seniors - Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) and Joe Mutimer (Melbourne, Australia), one junior - Dom Aguilar (Fergus Falls, Minn.) and two sophomores - Andre Renta (Hudson, Wis.) and redshirt sophomore Tony Dahl (Buffalo, Minn.) from last year's team. Mutimer, Taylor and Willert were starters. The Huskies brought in one grad transfer – Craig Steele (Portage, Wis.) and eight freshmen – Jamiir Allen (Milwuakee, Wis.), Nathan Bunkosky (Ponte Verda Beach, Fla.), Nate Dahl (Buffalo, Minn.), Wyatt Hawks (White Bear Lake, Minn.), Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia), Izaac Neal (Oak Creek, Wis.), Vance Peiffer (Waukee, Iowa) and Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.) over the offseason.
