LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State opened conference play last weekend with games against Minnesota Crookston and Minot State. On Friday against Minnesota Crookston, the Huskies surged out to an 8-0 lead after graduate student Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis.) scored five points in the opening five minutes. The Huskies led by eight points multiple times in the first half, but the Eagles found their wings and ended the half on a 12-2 run including a go-ahead and-one layup with one second left in the half.
The Huskies found themselves flying coming out of the halftime, opening the half on a 15-0 run and turned what was a three-point halftime deficit into a 12-point lead. During that run, the duo of senior Joe Mutimer (Melbourne, Australia) and freshman Vance Peiffer (Waukee, Iowa) set up 11 of the 15 points including an and-one layup by Peiffer. Mutimer set up the play after he froze his defender with a hesitation dribble to get in the lane, drew in the weakside defender, and then dumped it down into Peiffer who made the layup and converted the three-point play. Peiffer splashed a three-pointer off another dime by Mutimer to cap off the 15-0 Huskies run. Peiffer finished the game scoring a career-high 10 points. St. Cloud led the rest of the game despite Crookston coming within one point of the Huskies. In the final 7:35 of the game, St. Cloud iced the game by making 10 of their 14 free throw attempts coming away with a 64-60 victory. Freshman Jamiir Allen (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Huskies in scoring as he registered 12 points, three rebounds, two steals, and two made three pointers in 23 minutes off the bench. Freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) nearly notched his second career double-double as he recorded nine points, tied his career-high of 11 rebounds while setting a career-high of 10 defensive rebounds, and tallied three steals and two blocks.
Saturday's game against Minot State did not garner the same results for St. Cloud. The Huskies had another strong start to the game as they took a 10-3 lead early in the first half. Taylor also had another strong start as he scored nine of his 13 points in the opening half including six consecutive points for St. Cloud State to give it a 16-12 lead. An 18-5 run by Minot gave them a seven-point lead with 5:05 left in the 1st half, but back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.) and senior Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) quickly cut that lead back to one. The rest of the half went back and forth, but the Huskies headed into halftime trailing by one point after Allen made a buzzer beating right-handed layup as time expired.
Coming out of the break, St. Cloud used a 7-3 run to capture a three-point lead with five of those points coming from Morgan. The game continued to go back and forth until the 5:05 mark when the Beavers embarked on a 16-2 to put away the Huskies. Allen cashed in a jumper with 3:01 to bring the Huskies within four points, but St. Cloud could not get over the dam and went scoreless the remainder of the game. Minot State came away with an 85-70 victory to give St. Cloud its first conference loss on the season.
Highlights from both games can be found on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
