No. 2 seeded Huskies will face No. 3 seed Minnesota State in the Fargo regional on Thursday
INDIANAPOLIS – For the fifth consecutive season and 17th time in program history, St. Cloud State is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies are the No. 2 seed in the Fargo regional of the 2023 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.
The No. 2-seeded Huskies (24-12-3) will square off against CCHA Regular Season and Tournament Champion and No. 3 seed Minnesota State on Thursday, March 23 at 4:00 p.m. CT at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D. St. Cloud State is 60-61-3 all-time against the Mavericks, including a Husky series sweep on Oct. 21-22. The two teams have met in the NCAA Tournament once before, with the Huskies earning a 5-4 win over the Mavericks at the NCAA Frozen Four on April 8, 2021. The winner of the SCSU-MSU matchup will faceoff against the winner of No. 1 seed Minnesota and No. 4 seed Canisius, who play at 8:00 p.m. CT on Thursday.
The Huskies will be making their fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament under fifth-year head coach Brett Larson, as he continues to extend his mark as the first Husky bench boss to lead the team to NCAA Tournament berths in the first four seasons a tournament is played (no tournament in 2020 due to pandemic). The Huskies are coming off an NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship on Saturday, its second NCHC tournament title after taking home the trophy in 2016. It is SCSU's second conference championship under Larson after capturing the 2019 NCHC Penrose Cup, and the seventh conference title overall in program history.
Since the tournament moved to 16-team format in 2003, St. Cloud State has earned a 2-seed four times, most recently in 2021 when the Huskies advanced to its second NCAA Frozen Four and first-ever NCAA National Championship game appearance. That season, SCSU defeated Boston (6-2, March 27) and Boston College (4-1, March 28) in the Albany regional before advancing to Pittsburgh for the Frozen Four. In Pittsburgh, the Huskies beat Minnesota State (5-4, April 8) before falling to Massachusetts (5-0, April 10) in the National Championship game.
