Huskies earn two points in series finale after 45 save performance from Kyrkkö, goals from Parent, Promersberger and Ross
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 11/10 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (6-1-1, 2-1-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) earned a hard-fought two points in a shootout win in a 3-3 tie with No. 2 Ohio State (6-2-2, 4-2-2 WCHA) during the series finale on Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
The Huskies conceded a goal late in the first period and early in the second period, finding themselves down 2-0. Shortly after OSU scored their second goal, SCSU went on the power play and took advantage with a goal from fifth year forward Brieja Parent (Forest Lake, Minn.). Four minutes later, fifth year forward Abby Promersberger (Fargo, N.D.) scored an unassisted breakaway goal to tie the game at two.
With just under three minutes left in the game, OSU regained the lead, scoring a powerplay after the Huskies put too many players on the ice. SCSU emptied its net with a minute and 40 left in regulation in an attempt to score a goal to send the game to overtime. The Buckeyes then committed a penalty, and the Huskies had another powerplay chance, that senior defender Dayle Ross (Spirit River, Alberta) didn't let go to waste, knotting the game with just over 60 seconds left in the final period.
The game was tied at the end of regulation and neither team was able to score during overtime, leaving the bonus conference point up to a shootout. OSU missed its first shot, while sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) converted on the Huskies first attempt. Neither team was able to convert on their final two attempts, so the Huskies went on to win the shootout, 1-0 and leave the game with two points.
Freshman goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) was excellent in net, saving 45 shots during regulation and overtime in addition to all three she saw during the shootout.
