Farrell scores late goal to help force overtime, Huskies fall in shootout

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – No. 8/7 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (6-1-2, 2-1-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) skated to a 1-1 tie with (RV) St. Thomas, with the Tommies earning the shootout win and extra conference point on Friday night at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.

St. Thomas (4-2-1, 2-2-1 WCHA) jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the second period. The Huskies equalizer came from junior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) who scored an unassisted goal with just over five minutes left in the third period to force overtime.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net during overtime, so SCSU was forced into its second shootout in as many games to decide who earned the extra conference point. Graduate forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) and fifth year forward Abby Promersberger (Fargo, N.D.) each converted on their penalty shot, meanwhile freshman goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) saved three of the penalty shots she faced. Krykkö finished the game with 28 saves and just one goal allowed (.966 save %).

Senior defender Dayle Ross (Spirit River, Alberta) blocked a game-high six shots, was second on the Huskies in shots on goal and skated to a +1 mark
Gentry led the game with 10 shots on goal, tied for the Huskies lead in face off win (seven) s and made her penalty shot during the shootout.

NOTABLES

SCSU is now 9-3-2 all-time against the St. Thomas.
The Huskies had to go to a shootout for the second consecutive game.
SCSU led the game in faceoffs won (30-24) and saves (28-26). The Tommies led in shots on goal (29-27) and blocked shots (16-13).
Farrell scored the second goal of her season and was third for the Huskies in shots on goal with three. She skated to a +1.
Fifth year forward Brieja Parent (Forest Lake, Minn.) went 7-4 on the faceoff dot, tying for the most faceoff wins by a Husky and was a +1.
