St. Cloud State Cross Country Prepares for Northern Sun Championships

2024 NSIC Championships to be competed at the Souris Valley Golf Course in Minot, N.D. on Saturday
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Cross Country travels to Minot, N.D. this weekend to compete in the 2024 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championships on Saturday, Oct. 21. The 6,000-meter race will begin at noon at the Souris Valley Golf Course.

MEET HISTORY
Last season, the Huskies placed 14th at the NSIC Championships. Then-junior Cambrie Kowal (Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.) and then-freshman Paige Beason (Ankeny, Iowa) each finished in the top-100 while then-sophomore Hannah Little (Grimes, Iowa) and Beason each ran their personal best 6K time at the meet.

As for the rest of the conference, a new women's individual champion will be crowned this season as the three-time reigning champion Lindsay Cunningham graduated from Winona State. Winona State is the defending team champions and ranked 25th in the nation. Augustana, the 2021 and 2022 champion, is ranked eighth in the nation while the University of Mary is ranked 16th.
LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State Cross Country ran to an 11th-place team finish at its final regular season meet, the Tori Neubauer Invitational, hosted by UW-La Crosse at the Maple Grove Venues in West Salem, Wis. on Oct. 19. Four Huskies earned new 6,000-meter cross country bests and one more set a new season best time in the Huskies first 6K meet in nearly a month.
Greta Freed (Rochester, Minn.) finished first for the Huskies, placing 33rd in a time of 23:35.2, just under five second off her season best time from Roy Griak. She was followed by freshmen Abbygail Nunez (South St. Paul, Minn.) MerriAnna Johnson (Osceola, Wis,) who each ran to new personal best times. Nunez ran 24:34.1 to finish 69th, cutting nearly two and a half minutes off her previous best while Johnson was 74th in 24:44.6, knocking three minutes and 20 seconds off her previous best time.
Sophomore Wisconsin natives Alena Donahue (West Salem, Wis.) and Tegan Michalak (Arcadia, Wis.) each enjoyed great races in a return to their home state. Donahue ran a new season best time of 25:15.8 to finish 93rd and Michalak was 98th in a new personal best time of 25:20.8. Donahue cut just under a minute and 15 seconds off her season best while Michalak improved her personal best by over a minute and 10 seconds.
Sophomore Audrey Rabitz (Manitowoc, Wis.) finished her first collegiate 6K cross country race in 26:59.0 and sophomore Mady Muehr (Greendale, Wis.) ran to a new personal best time (27:54.5), shaving just under a minute from her old best.

St. Cloud State was selected to finish 14th in the 2024 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Coaches' Poll. Additionally, senior Cambrie Kowal (Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.) has been named an NSIC Athlete to Watch.
"I am excited for both the leadership and growing talent within this group," said second-year head coach Gabrielle Brown, "They are a predominately young group of individuals who are back and ready for more. The leaders of this team compliment the talents, vision, and efforts needed to make incremental change."
The Huskies roster is comprised of two seniors – Greta Freed (Rochester, Minn.) and Kowal, one junior – Hannah Little (Grimes, Iowa), five sophomores – Paige Beason (Ankeny, Iowa), Alena Donahue (West Salem, Wis.), Tegan Michalak (Arcadia, Wis.), Mady Muehr (Greendale, Wis.) and Audrey Rabitz (Manitowoc, Wis.) and two freshmen – MerriAnna Johnson (Osceola, Wis.) and Abbygail Nunez (South St. Paul, Minn.).
"This past season Cam [Kowal] was one of the athletes who realized just how much she was capable of," said Brown, "I am excited to see her step up fully and confidently into the amazing athlete that she is. She will be foundational for the growth needed to move us forward."
