Huskies win series finale in OT, 3-2
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – An overtime goal from sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) helped No. 8 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (8-4-2, 4-4-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) earn a 3-2 overtime victory over (RV) Minnesota State and snap a three-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud in the series finale.
After an up-and-down first period that ended scoreless, the Mavericks (3-6-1, 1-6-1) scored the game's first goal early in the second period. Graduate forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) responded for the Huskies late in the second period when she scored in amongst a scrum of players in the crease, knotting the game at one.
Minnesota State regained the lead six and a half minutes in the final period, but SCSU responded with another game tying goal when junior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) found the back of the net with 10 minutes left in regulation. Senior defender Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn.) put a shot on goal and the puck bounced of the pads of the Mavericks goaltender leaving Farrell with a perfect rebound opportunity that she finished off.
Neither team was able to score in the rest of the third period, sending the series finale to overtime. With just under two minutes left in the third period, an MSU player picked up a penalty, so the Huskies started overtime with a 4-on-3 advantage. The SCSU powerplay ended 17 seconds into overtime, but the Huskies were able to score before the Minnesota State player made it back into the play from the box.
