Huskies score two third-period goals to force OT, drop shootout
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – No. 8 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (9-5-3, 5-5-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) skated to a 2-2 tie with Union (N.Y.) to open the teams' nonconference series on Friday night at Messa Rink in Schenectady, New York. It took nine shooters, but the Garnet Chargers eventually won the shootout, 2-1.
The Huskies trailed 1-0 after the first 20 minutes and 2-0 after 40 minutes but responded with two goals in the final period to force overtime. SCSU's first goal came just under six minutes into the third period when senior defender Ella Anick (Hermantown, Minn.) scored. Six minutes later, fifth year forward Ally Qualley (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored the second St. Cloud State goal of the period to tie the game at two with 7:38 left in regulation. Junior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) provided the primary assist for each goal while senior defender Taylor Larson (Nisswa, Minn.) tallied the secondary assist on Anick's goal and senior defender Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn.) recorded the secondary assist on Qualley's goal.
Neither team found the back of the net in the rest of regulation, or during the five minutes of three-on-three overtime hockey, so the game ended as a tie and went to a shootout.
Union (7-9-1, 4-3-0 ECACH) converted on its first penalty shot while SCSU scored its second to tie the shootout at one after two shooters. The next 12 shots were stopped before the Garnet Chargers were able to convert their second of the shootout. The Huskies could not convert on their next shot, so Union won the shootout, 2-1.
