Huskies fall in the shootout as UMD earns the extra conference point
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 8/9 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (10-5-4, 5-5-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) skated to a 1-1 tie with No. 4 Minnesota Duluth to open the teams' conference series on Friday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The Bulldogs went on to win the shootout, 1-0, to earn the extra WCHA point.
The Huskies found the back of the net early, as sophomore forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) scored just 5:19 into the first period after teaming up with sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) on a two-on-two breakaway. Despite scoring first, UMD (10-5-2, 7-4-2 WCHA) held the shots on goal advantage over SCSU for the entirety of the game.
The second period went scoreless, but the Bulldogs tied the game early in the third period. SCSU was not able to convert on its powerplay opportunity late in the third period or the shortened one to end the five-minute overtime, so the game was forced into a shootout.
SCSU missed its first shootout opportunity while the Bulldogs converted on theirs to take a 1-0 lead. The Huskies missed their final two shots as well and Minnesota Duluth left the series opener with a 1-0 shootout win and two conference points.
Fifth year goaltender Sanni Ahola (Helsinki, Finland) was solid all day in net and made some huge saves to keep it a 1-1 game late in the third period and during three-on-three hockey in overtime. In total, the netminder made 34 saves.
