Mousseau joins as pitching coach and director of player development, James named graduate assistant
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball head coach Pat Dolan has announced the additions of SJ Mousseau and Cal James to his coaching staff. Mousseau will work with the pitchers and as the director of player development while James transitions onto the coaching staff as a graduate assistant after exhausting his eligibility with the Huskies in 2024.
"First off, we are very grateful for Coach [Riley] Ahern and everything he's done not only for our pitching staff, but for our program as a whole," said Dolan, "The Ahern family from Riley and Shanon, who both played for us, to Pat and Barb are just flat out fabulous! They truly epitomize what we want out of our Husky Baseball families!"
Mousseau joins St. Cloud State after serving as the Director of Pitching Development and Bullpen Coach at Division-II Erskine College (S.C.). Prior to his arrival at Erskine, Mousseau was a pitching trainer at Driveline Baseball in Washington. While at Driveline, he worked with high school, collegiate, MiLB, KBO, NPB and MLB pitchers and learned under the likes of Brandon Mann, Matt Kress, Eddie Yost, Jackson Sigman, Joel Condreay and more.
The right-handed pitcher played collegiate baseball at the DII, DIII and Junior College level. Mousseau finished his playing career at North Park University (DIII) in Chicago, Ill. as a grad transfer. In his final collegiate season, he helped the Vikings reach the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) tournament. During his time at NPU, Mousseau also served as a Pitching Intern at Push Performance in Tempe, Ariz. where he worked with pitchers Logan Webb, Kyle Bradish, Ian Hamilton and Shelby Miller among others.
Mousseau received a degree in Sports Communication from Upper Iowa University (DII). In addition to being on the baseball team, he also served as a color commentator for the Peacocks volleyball team. Prior to UIU, he played at junior colleges, Western Nebraska CC and Barstow CC (Calif.). Mousseau helped Western Nebraska reach the Region IX championship game in 2019.
A native of Boulder, Colo., Mousseau graduated from Fairview High School in 2017 where he earned letters in football (four) and baseball (two).
"Thanks to Riley [Ahern], we were able to connect with SJ and get him interested in joining our staff," said Dolan, "Coach Moose is an analytical junkie who brings amazing knowledge of new pitching technology from his experience working at Driveline. And just the one month I've known him he's showing me that he's a grinder working 12+ hour days. Definitely my type of guy!"
James joins the coaching staff after using his final season of eligibility for the Huskies in 2024. In his final season of collegiate eligibility, he started all 51 games for SCSU, owning a slash line of .369/.504/.682 with 66 hits (15 doubles, one triple and 13 home runs). He scored 53 runs and drove in another 49. He set new career highs in home runs, RBI (tie) and walks (32). Among conference leaders, James finished second in on-base percentage (.504), fifth in OPS (1.186), sixth in home runs (13), seventh in slugging percentage (.682) and ninth in runs scored (53).
The third baseman was named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) First Team, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-Central Region Second Team and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Central Region Second team. He was also named NSIC Player of the week once in 2024. His 13 home runs led the team and rank eighth on SCSU's single season top-10 list while his 42 career home runs rank 18th among D-II players who were active in 2024.
Prior to his time at SCSU, James played four seasons (the 2020 season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic) for fellow NSIC school, UMary. He was named NSIC Rookie of the Year and to the NSIC All-First Team following his first complete collegiate season in 2021.
After a stellar senior season in 2023, he was named a Third Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). He was also named to the First Team All-NSIC and was a NCBWA All-Central Region Honorable Mention selection.
James left the Marauders as their all-time leader in hits (198), runs (154) and doubles (48). He also finished first and second in single season doubles (18 in 2022, 17 in 2023), first in single season runs (61), second in single season hits (68), third in career home runs (29), fourth in RBI (133) and seventh in career batting average (.347).
He was named the 2023 UMary Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a Northern Sun Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction recipient. He graduated from Mary in 2023 with a 3.98 GPA and a degree in Business Administration.
A native of Buffalo, Minn., James graduated from Buffalo High School in 2019.
He is currently pursuing a master's in sports management.
"And what can't you say about Cal James? Probably one of the biggest mistakes I've made in my 30 years was not recruited him harder, five years ago out of Buffalo, but at that time we were pretty solid with infield depth," said Dolan, "Having to coach against him for three years was painful. The guy is a true gamer and another baseball gym rat. He has great parents that are great supporters and we are fortunate to have him on staff as a graduate assistant. Like SJ, the experience on the analytical side that he brings and his strong work ethic along with his unbelievable knowledge of hitting will be a huge addition to our staff!"
"The addition of Coach Moose and Coach Cal, along with Doc and Coach Moone makes this one of the best coaching staffs we have put together in my 18 years at SCSU and my 30 years of coaching college baseball," said Dolan, "Player development is so important and to have not only a great young pitching coach and infield coach in SJ and Cal, but also one of the best outfield coaches around in Doc and a great addition bringing in Coach Moone last year working with our catchers has been great!"
