Hawkey and Primerno score to lift SCSU to first victory over Beavers since 2019
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (5-1-0, 2-0-0 NSIC) won its fifth consecutive game after beating Bemidji State (3-3-0, 1-1-0 NSIC), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud. Junior forward Ellie Primerano (Saint Joseph, Mich.) continued her hot stretch to start the season, scoring for the third consecutive game as her second half score proved to be the game-winner. She also recorded her first assist of the season on senior forward Ariel Hawkey's (Graham, Wash.) first period score.
The win avenged SCSU's three setbacks to the Beavers last season and moved the Huskies to 2-0 to open conference play.
TURNING POINT
SCSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after goals in the 16th minute from Hawkey and 65th minute from Primerano. On the first goal, Primerano was able to sneak a pass past two Beaver defenders to Hawkey, who found herself alone behind the Bemdiji backline. Hawkey then beat the Bemidji goalkeeper to the far side to give the Huskies the early advantage. It was Primerano's turn then in the second half, as moved down the left side of the field and flipped a shot towards the front of the net, where Bemidji State's goalkeeper got a hand on the ball but couldn't stop it enough before crossing the goal line for a 2-0 lead.
SCSU held off a late charge from BSU in the second half, including a Beaver goal in the last minute, but SCSU held on to the 2-1 win.
