Sauriol tallies three assists, Yrjölä nets first collegiate goal as Huskies blanks Bemidji State, 3-0
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 11 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (11-8-4, 6-8-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) shut out Bemidji State, 3-0, in a WCHA tilt on Friday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
The Huskies got on the board first late in the first period after sophomore forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) forced a BSU turnover and made an incredible pass to fifth year forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) who made the best of her one-one-one opportunity with the Beavers' netminder. Bemidji State was awarded a penalty shot with just under 30 seconds left in the first period but sent the attempt wide to keep the Huskies lead at 1-0.
St. Cloud State added two power play goals in the second period to break the game open. The first goal was put away by sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland), with seven minutes left in the second period after receiving a pass from Sauriol right in front of the net. Two minutes later, Sundelin and Sauriol set up freshman defender Siiri Yrjölä (Vantaa, Finland), who scored her first career collegiate goal to extend the SCSU lead to three.
Neither team scored in the final period and freshman goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) secured a 17-save shutout win to give the Huskies their first win since November 30. SCSU's special teams stepped up as it killed off all three penalties it took and scored on two of its four power play opportunities.
