No. 10 St. Cloud State Women’s Hockey Drops Series Opener to No. 3 Minnesota

Mikaelyan scores lone Husky goal in 4-1 defeat
MINNEAPOLIS – No. 10 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (3-2-0, 0-1-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) dropped its first WCHA tilt of the season, 4-1, to No. 3 Minnesota on Friday evening at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
After a scoreless first period, the Gophers (5-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) found the back of the net just 70 seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. The Huskies tied the game at one after a goal from freshman forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) at the 13-minute mark of the second period. Senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) forced a Minnesota turnover at the end wall and freshman forward Raili Mustonen (Kalajoki, Finland) recovered the loose puck and found Mikaelyan who streaking through the low slot unmarked.
The Gophers added two goals within 40 seconds of each other and took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
With three minutes remaining in the game, SCSU pulled its goaltender in an attempt to draw closer, but Minnesota iced the game with an empty-net goal with 75 seconds remaining.
