Huskies score five goals in fourth consecutive game, Berzins solid in net to secure series split
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (6-3-0, 1-1-0 NCHC) scored five goals for the fourth consecutive game and earned a statement win over No. 3 Western Michigan (5-3-0, 1-1-0 NCHC), 5-1, on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Sophomore goaltender Patriks Berzins (Talsi, Latvia) flirted with a shutout, making 32 saves while sophomore forward Jack Reimann (Ham Lake, Minn.) scored twice to lead the way offensively.

SCSU seized momentum early, scoring on a 5-on-3 power play just 6:12 into the game when junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) one-timed a slap shot from the right dot to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) played a two-man game under the goal line before finding Gross alone in the slot for the score. The Huskies were then put to the test early when senior defenseman Mason Reiners (Edina, Minn.) was called for a five-minute major cross-checking penalty at 8:37. Instead of yielding a goal, SCSU used the penalty kill to build momentum with Berzins turning away all seven Bronco shots on goal while senior forward Grant Ahcan (Savage, Minn.) and redshirt senior forward Ryan Rosborough (Mt. Brydges, Ontario) caused distribution on the forecheck.

Reimann scored his first of two goals in the second period as the Huskies were relentless out in front of the net. Senior defenseman Max Smolinski (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) started the chance with a shot from the point that was saved but left out in front where Rosborough grabbed the rebound and worked his way around the back of the net before finding Reimann in front of the net for a one-timer that found the back of the net. SCSU then extended its lead later on in the period when Burnevik converted on the power play for his nation-leading sixth power play goal and NCHC-leading 11th goal overall. The Husky sophomore scored from his favorite spot on the ice, the right faceoff dot, sending a one-time rocket to the back of the net off a feed from senior forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba).

SCSU then pushed its lead to as high as 5-0 after scoring twice in the third period on goals from sophomore forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) at the 3:21 mark and Reimann's second of the game at the 15:33 mark. Western Michigan found the back of the net at 16:14 to make the score 16:14.
