Huskies hold off No. 3 Gophers 4-3, Idalski becomes second coach in program history to amass 50 wins
MINNEAPOLIS – Senior defender Ella Anick (Hermantown, Minn.) helped No. 11 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (15-10-6, 10-10-5 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) make history on Friday night at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis after scoring with just seconds left in the game. Her goal became the game-winner after pushing the Huskies back ahead, 4-3. The win marked SCSU's first ever road win against the Gophers in 63 total games in Minneapolis.
The win also made history for head coach Brian Idalski, who became just the second coach in program history to amass 50 wins and the first to do so in three seasons or less. He also became the first coach in program history to beat Minnesota on the road and is just the second coach to post three consecutive 15+ win seasons.
Sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) put the Huskies on the board 6:17 into the game after finding herself wide open on the back side of the net on a rush during the Huskies first power play opportunity. Less than two minutes later, fifth year forward Emma Gentry's (Alpena, Mich.) doubled the Huskies lead.
The Gophers (22-9-1, 16-8-1 WCHA) got one goal back in the second period and tied the game at two just under 11 minutes into the final period after converting on a power play opportunity of their own.
Sundelin netted her second goal of the game after a beautiful forehand, backhand move, giving the Huskies a 3-2 lead with 3:15 left.
Each team had a player sent to the box for roughing with under two minutes remaining, so the final 1:51 were played 4-on-4. Minnesota pulled their goaltender immediately after however, to give itself a 5-on-4 advantage. Just 12 seconds into the Gophers' extra attacker advantage, they scored to bring the game even at three.
With 50 seconds remaining, the Huskies forced a UMN player into a bad turnover which led to a breakaway opportunity for sophomore forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec). Her shot made it through the legs of the Gopher goaltender, but stopped before crossing the goal line and was cleared by a Minnesota player. Then Gentry gathered the puck and took a shot that was blocked before Anick received the puck inside the blue line and let a long shot go, scoring the eventual game-winner.
