No. 11/10 Huskies Third Period Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against No. 2 Ohio State

SCSU drop series opener, 5-3 after Buckeyes add empty netter
COLUMBUS, Ohio. – No. 11/10 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (15-12-6, 10-12-5 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) had its third period comeback attempt thwarted by No. 2 Ohio State on Friday evening at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, falling to the Buckeyes, 5-3.
Ohio State (24-6-3, 18-6-3 WCHA) scored the game's first three goals and held a 3-0 lead until the sophomore forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) found the back of the net with just under four and a half minutes left in the second period.
The Huskies added two consecutive goals in the first seven and a half minutes of the third period to tie the game at three. Redshirt sophomore forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) scored just seven seconds into a Huskies power play opportunity and fifth year forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) converted on a rebound to bring the game even, however Ohio State scored a power play goal just over a minute later and added an empty netter with just over a minute left in the game to make the final 5-3.

- Gentry was the lone Husky with multiple points (one goal/one assist).
- Sauriol and Zimmermann netted the other two Husky goals.
- Senior defender Dayle Ross (Spirit River, Alberta) blocked a team high two shots.
- SCSU moves to 32-62-12 all-time against Ohio State and 15-28-8 against the Buckeyes in Columbus. The Huskies are 0-2-1 against OSU so far this season.
- The Huskies blocked 9+ shots for the 17th time this season (fourth consecutive) and saved 27+ shots for the 16th time (fourth straight).
- SCSU led the game in saves (27-13), while the Buckeyes led in shots (32-16) and faceoff wins (44-25). Each team blocked nine shots.
- The Huskies power play went 1-for-5, and their penalty kill went 1-for-3.
- Gentry recorded two points, giving her 88 for her career and sole possession of 10th place all-time in program history. She played her 149th career game, moving into a tie for second place with Caitlin Hogan (2006-10) and Holly Roberts (2006-10). Her goal brought her back even with sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) for the team lead with 11. It was her fourth multi-point game of the season and fifth straight game with a point. Her 18 points rank third on the team this season. She won double-digit faceoffs for the 21st time this season and ninth consecutive game.
- Sauriol netted her sixth goal of the season and 12th of her career. She leads the team in points with 21.
- Zimmermann's goal was the sixth of her season and 10th of her career. She set a new season record for power play goals with two.
- Ross has blocked 2+ shots in 11 games this season including the last three games.
- Sundelin recorded her ninth assist of the season for her 20th point. She is the second Husky, after Sauriol, to reach 20 points this season. Her nine assists rank third on the team this season.
- Senior defender Taylor Larson (Nisswa, Minn.) tallied her 15th career assist and 20th career point.
- Fifth year forward Ally Qualley (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) posted her third assist of the season in her first game back in the lineup after returning from an injury.
- Fifth year forward Avery Myers (Fargo, N.D.) recorded the 15th assist of her career.
- Fifth year forward Brieja Parent (Forest Lake, Minn.) skated in her 130th career game.
- Fifth year goaltender Sanni Ahola (Helsinki, Finland) appeared in her 85th game as a Husky.
