No. 11 St. Cloud State Women’s Hockey Drops Heartbreaker to No. 6 Minnesota Duluth in Game One of the WCHA First Round

Huskies concede two goals in final two minutes, fall, 3-2
DULUTH, Minn. – No. 11 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (15-14-6, 10-13-5 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) dropped a heartbreaker to No. 6 Minnesota Duluth in the first game of its WCHA First Round series on Friday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth. The Huskies held a 2-1 lead with 1:55 left but fell 3-2 after conceding two late goals.
SCSU was assessed a five-minute major penalty at the 13:13 mark of the first period and the Bulldogs (20-13-2, 14-12-2) took advantage, scoring the game's first goal just over three and a half minutes later. The Huskies killed off the rest of the major but trailed 1-0 after the first period.
Just as the Huskies second power play ended scoreless, fifth year forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) put a rebound into the back of the net to tie the game at one. Just 16 seconds into SCSU's next power play opportunity, sophomore forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) scored off a cross-ice pass from freshman defender Siiri Yrjölä (Vantaa, Finland).
Trailing by two with 2:16 left, UMD took a timeout and pulled its goalie. The Bulldogs took advantage of their extra attacker opportunity, scoring the game-tying goal with 1:55 left. Minnesota Duluth netted the game-winning goal with five seconds left.

- Senior defender Dayle Ross (Spirit River, Alberta) led the Huskies with two points after assisting on both goals.
- Gentry and Sauriol each netted a goal. Gentry won 15 faceoffs and Sauriol tied for the team lead in blocks, with two.
- Senior defenders Ella Anick (Hermantown, Minn.) and Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn.) also tied for the team lead in blocks with two.
- SCSU moves to 15-91-12 all-time against Minnesota Duluth and 5-55-5 against the Bulldogs in Duluth. The Huskies are 0-4-1 against UMD this season.
- The Huskies blocked 9+ shots for the 19th time this season (sixth straight game) and saved 28+ shots for the 16th time.
- SCSU tallied a power play goal for the third game in a row.
- The Huskies led the game in shots (34-31), and blocked shots (9-6), while UMD led in faceoff wins (44-30) and saves (32-28).
- The Huskies power play went 1-for-3, and their penalty kill went 3-for-4.
- Ross posted just the second multi-assist game of her season/career. Her 13 assists this season rank second on the team. She now has 15 points this season (fourth on the team) and 40 for her career.
- Gentry scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season and became the third Husky to reach 20 points this season. She now has 20 points this season and 90 for her career. Her 90 career points rank eighth all-time. After her three-shot night, she took over sole possession of 10th in single season shots on goal (135) after already owning the No. 6 (145, 2021-22) and No. 8 (139, 2023-24) spots. She has scored a goal in five straight games and is on a seven-game point streak.
- Sauriol netted the second power play goal of her season and her career. Her 22 points lead the team while her seven goals this season rank third. She blocked 2+ shots for the third time this season. She has blocked a shot in six consecutive games.
- Anick blocked 2+ shots for the sixth time this season and has blocked a shot in six straight games.
- Wolfe blocked 2+ shots for the 16th time this season.
- Junior defender Regan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) skated in her 65th career game and recorded a career-high five shots on goal.
- Yrjölä tied career highs in assists (one) and shots on goal (three). Her assist marked her fifth point of the season.
- Redshirt sophomore forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) recorded an assist and ranks fifth on the team in points this season (14).
- Sophomore forward Greta Henderson (Regina, Saskatchewan) skated in her 65th career game
