MSU wins shootout to earn extra conference point
MANKATO, Minn. – No. 11 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (14-10-6, 9-10-5 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) skated to a 2-2 tie with (RV) Minnesota State in the team's series finale on Saturday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic HSEC in Mankato. The Mavericks (11-17-2, 5-17-2 WCHA) earned the extra WCHA point after winning the shootout, 2-1.
Sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) put the Huskies up 1-0 eight minutes into the first period after putting the rebound from her initial shot into the back of the net. With just over four minutes left in the first 20 minutes, MSU evened the game at one and took its first lead of the series after scoring just over four minutes into the second period. Junior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) brought the game back even after tipping in fifth year forward Emma Gentry's (Alpena, Mich.) shot from the high slot.
The game's final 15 minutes, including overtime, went scoreless sending the game to a best-of-three shootout which Minnesota State won, 2-1 after five shooters.

The Huskies will play Minnesota in a home-and-home series next weekend. SCSU travels to Ridder Arena in Minneapolis on Friday, Feb. 14 to play at 6 p.m. before returning to St. Cloud and the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. Saturday will serve as Senior Day to honor the team's 10 seniors. - Fifth year goaltender Sanni Ahola (Helsinki, Finland) saved 27 shots (.931 save percentage).
- SCSU moves to 54-43-14 all-time against Minnesota State including a 23-21-7 mark against the Mavericks in Mankato. The Huskies finished the season series 2-1-1 against MSU.
- The Huskies are now 1-5 in shootouts this season.
- SCSU led the game in shots (32-29) and blocked shots (9-6), while the Mavericks led in faceoff wins (27-22) and saves (30-27).
- The Huskies power play went 0-for-4, and their penalty kill went 3-for-3.
- Sundelin retook the team lead in goals after scoring her ninth of the season. Her goal was the 10th of her career and the 25th point of her career.
- Farrell's goal was her sixth of the season (10th point) and 25th of her career. She became the seventh Husky to reach 10 points this season.
- Gentry's assist was the 30th of her career. She is three points away from joining the program's career top-10 list. She played in her 146th game as a Husky, tying Laura Fast (2004-08) for fifth most in program history. It is the sixth consecutive and 18th overall game she has won 10+ draws.
- Anick's assist was her fifth point of the season.
- Ahola improved her season save percentage to .918 and goals against average to 2.06. It was her 80th career start. It was her sixth time making 27+ saves in a game this season.
- Junior defender Regan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) and sophomore forward Greta Henderson (Regina, Saskatchewan) skated in their 60th career game.
- Sophomore forward Marie Moran (Lakeville, Minn.) played in her 30th career game.
