Drossel and Werner named 2025-26 Athletes to Watch
BURNSVILLE, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Swim & Dive was selected to finish third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced on Thursday. Additionally, sophomore Hallie Drossel (Melrose, Minn.) was named the NSIC Preseason Swimmer of the Year. Drossel was joined by sophomore diver Abriella Werner (Soldotna, Alaska) as the 2025-26 Athletes to Watch.
The Huskies received 68 points and one first-place vote in the poll, finishing behind preseason favorite Minnesota State (77 points, six first-place votes) and Augustana (74 points, three first-place votes). Selected to finish fourth behind SCSU was Concordia-St. Paul (51), Sioux Falls (44), MSU Moorhead (39), UMary (38), Southwest Minnesota State (31), Jamestown (16) and Northern State (12).
After graduating a large senior class, I am excited for a new group of upperclassmen to step up and lead our team," said head coach Jeff Hegle. "We have a talented incoming class of student-athletes that will make an immediate impact on our team's success."
Drossel returns for her sophomore campaign after a stellar debut season where she qualified for the 2025 NCAA Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke, posting a personal-best time of 1:02.87 while finishing 25th. She finished runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2025 NSIC Championships, earning All-NSIC honors. Drossel also won the 100-yard breaststroke at the Rochester Invite with a time of 1:02.89 and posted a personal best time of 2:27.26 in the 200-yard breaststroke at the 2025 NSIC Championships.
"Hallie had an outstanding first year of college swimming, recording best times and qualifying for the NCAA Division II National meet," said Hegle. "She is an extremely hard worker and a great teammate. We are excited to see what she accomplishes this season."
Werner also impressed in her freshman campaign for the Huskies, qualifying for the 1M and 3M dives at the 2025 NCAA Championships where she finished 21st and 22nd, respectively. At the NSIC meet, she finished seventh in the 1M dive and ninth in the 3M dive. She posted her personal-best score in the 3M dive at the NSIC Championships with a score of 356.5.
"Abriella improved immensely throughout her first year at SCSU, ultimately qualifying for the NCAA Division II National meet," said Hegle. "She is eager to learn and has been working hard to continue to improve. She will be fun to watch this year."
SCSU will host its annual Intrasquad Meet (Sept. 25-26) and Alumni Meet (Sept. 27) this weekend before officially opening the season against Northern Michigan and Davenport in Marquette, Mich., on Oct. 3-4.
