Huskies score two unanswered goals in 2-1 victory, remain undefeated
STORRS, Conn. – No. 13/12 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (3-0-0, 0-0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) scored two unanswered goals in its 2-1 road victory over No. 12/13 UConn on Friday night at the Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs, Connecticut.
Halfway through the first period, UConn (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East) scored the game's first goal, ending SCSU's season-opening 130-minute shutout streak.
In the final three minutes of the first period, SCSU responded with a goal of its own to tie the game at one. Redshirt junior Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) had her shot blocked and the puck ended up behind the net with senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) who then passed it freshman forward Raili Mustonen (Kalajoki, Finland) who scored after finding herself wide open just outside the crease.
Neither team scored in the second period, but SCSU took its first lead of the game just over two minutes into the final period after junior forward Payton Holloway (Tomah, Wis.) and freshman forward Julianne Labbé (Wendake, Quebec) found themselves on a 2-on-1 breakaway from their own defensive zone. The duo executed a give-and-go perfectly and just as a second UConn defender made it back into the play, Holloway set Labbé up right in front of the net and she took advantage, putting the puck into the back of the net.
Sophomore goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) was spectacular in net all game, saving 35 of the 36 shots she faced.
