Huskies drop series finale 3-2 at Anderson Arena
ST. PAUL, Minn. – (RV) St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (8-18-2, 4-16-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) nearly erased a three-goal deficit in the third period, but were unable to complete the comeback despite two goals from junior forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) in the final 20 minutes, dropping its series finale against (RV) St. Thomas 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena in St. Paul.
St. Thomas (12-16-0, 7-15-0 WCHA) opened the game's scoring with a power play goal 11:54 into the first period before adding a pair of even strength goals in the second period to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the final 20 minutes.
The Huskies got on the board for the first time just 53 seconds into the final frame when freshman forward Payton Remick (Roseau, Minn.) found Sundelin, who put the puck in the back of the net with a sharp angle shot from the goal line.
Sundelin scored her second goal of the game, a power play tally, with 11:28 left. After a faceoff win in the offensive zone went to freshman defender Sydney Lamb (Lombard, Ill.) at the right point, she delivered a D-to-D pass to graduate defender Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn.) at the top of the left circle who threaded a pass in between four UST defenders to Sundelin who was wide open on the back door.
With just under 1:45 left, St. Cloud State pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, and despite getting a few high quality looks in the final 45 seconds, the Tommies were able to stand strong defensively and hold on for the series sweep.
