Huskies take on Minot State and UMary
St. Cloud, MN. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (9-5, 6-2 NSIC) hit the road for the first time in 2026 as they travel to North Dakota on Friday, January 9 to play Minot State and then UMary on Saturday, January 10. Friday's game is set for 5:30 p.m. while Saturday's game will tip-off at 3:30 p.m.

Huskies Open 2026 with 75-67 Win Over Minnesota State- January 3, 2026
The Mavericks would jump out to a quick 6-0 lead after knocking down two three-pointers in the first minute and a half. A 12-4 run capped off by a triple from Azayah Washington gave the Huskies their first lead of the game at 12-10. MSU would respond with a 10-2 run of their own as they looked to have grabbed momentum with 10:41 left in the half. Back-to-back layups by Nate Dahl was the beginning of a 9-0 run where Anish Ramlall retook the lead for SCSU with a triple. The remainder of the half bounced back and forth before a 10-3 run over the final 3:03 gave the Huskies a 35-31 halftime lead. While the Mavericks connected on five triples, the St. Cloud State defense was stout in the paint as MSU shot 33.3% from the field.
The second half saw the Huskies hold a steady lead where they halted the Mavs every time they looked to retake the lead. SCSU would lead 63-59 with 4:31 remaining after a pair of free throws by Wyatt Hawks. Dahl forced a turnover on the ensuing possession and found an open Bob Griechen on the fastbreak who threw down a ferocious two-handed dunk. The Huskies carried over that momentum as Luke Winkel collapsed the defense on two straight possessions to find cutters in Lee Marks III and Griechen for open layups. Mankato would call a timeout with 2:30 as the Huskies led 69-61. The Huskies closed out the game at the free throw line as they made six of their final eight free throws to come away with a 75-67 victory at Halenbeck Hall.

Balanced Scoring Props Huskies to 96-46 Win over Martin Luther College- January 4, 2026
St. Cloud State burst out of the gates with a 12-2 run as Wyatt Hawks accounted for six of those points. The Huskies continued expanding the lead throughout the half by piling up points in the paint. SCSU closed the half in commanding fashion as an 18-1 run over the final 4:19 of the half led to a 52-21 lead at the break.
The Huskies continued to roll in the second half as they led by 32+ points the rest of the way with their biggest lead being 52 points. SCSU ultimately went on to 96-46 to stay unbeaten at Halenbeck Hall.

With a pair of wins at Halenbeck Hall this past weekend, the Huskies remain unbeaten at home with a 6-0 record. The last time SCSU started 6-0 or better at home was the 2019-20 season where they began 7-0 at Halenbeck Hall.

With eight blocks this past weekend, junior Wyatt Hawks cracked into the top 10 in career blocks. Hawks is up to 81 career blocks to tie Theo Rothstein for seventh all-time and is averaging 2.0 blocks per game.

Huskies Fall in Conference Opener Against Minot State- December 6, 2024
Through the first eight minutes of play, both teams struggled offensively as Minot State would lead 15-12 after Kynan Philippe drilled a three-pointer on a fastbreak at the 11:20 mark of the first half. The Beavers started to quickly take control as they used a 20-6 run over the next seven minutes to lead 35-18 with 4:23 left in the half. Minot State kept their distance to close out the half as they would lead 45-25 at the break. Offense in the first half was a struggle for St. Cloud State as they shot 31% from the field and a lowly 10% from beyond the arc on 20 attempts. The Huskies were not much better defensively as the Beavers shot 58% from the floor.
The second half was very reminiscent of the first half as the Huskies were unable to get within 20 points and trailed by as many as 34 points in the second half. The offense picked up for SCSU in the second half as they shot 52% from the field, but allowed the Beavers to shoot 63% from the field. St. Cloud State would go on to lose 58-91 in their conference opener to Minot State.

Huskies Rally Late for Big Win Against No. 22 Minot State-February 8, 2025
In what was a physical start and ultimately a game of runs, St. Cloud State held a narrow 9-8 lead at the 15:08 mark of the first half. The Huskies would start to take control of the game as and-one layup by Anish Ramlall capped off a 14-4 run to put SCSU up 23-12. St. Cloud State kept a steady lead but slowly started to extend the lead as the half neared its end. A three by Nathan Bunkosky put SCSU up 35-18 with 5:35 left in the half as the Huskies held all the momentum. The Beavers did not end the half quietly as a quick 8-0 forced a timeout by St. Cloud State as the momentum had now swung in favor of Minot State. The Beavers kept pouring it on as the half came to a close as a dunk by Caleb Van De Griend set the score at 37-34. That score solidified going into halftime as the Beavers ended the half on a 16-2 run to now only trail by three points at the break.
Out of halftime, Minot State opened on a quick 8-0 run to now lead 42-37. The teams battled back and forth for the next few minutes before a three-pointer by Jaxson Gunville gave the Beavers a 54-45 lead after an 8-0 run. Minot State held a steady lead over the next six minutes as their largest lead came to be nine points. Trailing 70-62 with 8:29 remaining in the game, St. Cloud State made a quick burst with a 6-0 to force a Beavers timeout. Out of the break, Minot State weathered the storm with a three-pointer, but after trading scoreless possessions, Kynan Philippe started the storm back up with a slot three. Free throws by Luke Winkel at the 5:11 mark tied the game at 73. Following a free throw by Minot, they would lead 76-75 with 3:56 left in the game. The marksman Philippe against cashed a big three for the Huskies as they would lead 78-76 with 3:08 remaining. Following a forced turnover, Nate Dahl drove to the right side of the basket, took contact, and finished the massive and-one. Dahl would miss the free throw, but grab his own rebound twice after missing a putback. Dahl worked the ball out to set up the offense where Luke Winkel finished a floater as SCSU now led 82-76 with 2:07 remaining. Forcing a turnover, Winkel would get fouled and make two free throws. The Huskies strung another defensive stop as Dahl delivered a dagger three from the top of the key as St. Cloud State now held an 11-point lead. Lucas Morgan ultimately capped off the victory for the Huskies with a breakaway dunk as St. Cloud State upset No. 22 Minot State 91-81. This game was truly a game of runs as the Huskies opened on a 35-18 run in which the Beavers responded with a 52-27 run. SCSU closed the game on a 29-11 run including a 16-6 mark over the final 4:32 of the game.

Saturday's game against UMary will be the 36th career game between the two programs with St. Cloud State holding a 22-13 series advantage. The Huskies have won five straight over the Marauders including a sweep of the series last year.
Huskies Impress on Both Ends in 66-50 Win Against UMary- December 17, 2024
The Huskies got off to a hot start as they cashed four three-pointers in first four minutes of the game. Lucas Morgan knocked in three of those makes for a quick nine points while helping the Huskies lead 13-5. St. Cloud State held a 7+ point lead for the majority of the half as they led 31-23 with 4:09 left in the half after a jumper by Nate Dahl. From that point, the Marauders started to claw back as they closed the half on a 7-3 run and made a buzzer beating three to end the half. St. Cloud State would hold a 34-30 lead going into the break.
Like the first half, SCSU had a blazing start to the second half as they opened the half on a 14-2 run. St. Cloud State led 48-32 after Lucas Morgan and Anish Ramlall knocked down consecutive three-pointers to push the lead to 16. The Marauders called a timeout to halt the momentum, but Luke Winkel immediately drained a three-pointer following a defensive stop by the Huskies. St. Cloud State would comfortably lead by 13+ points the rest of the way as they stepped up defensively in the second half. UMary scored 20 points on 7/27 shooting in the second half as SCSU picked up their second straight win with a 66-50 victory over the Marauders.

Second Half Three-Point Barrage Powers Huskies Past Marauders 84-54- February 5, 2025
Through the first 10 minutes of play, the teams would be tied at 16 points apiece with neither team able to grow a lead. A 5-1 run by the Marauders gave them a 21-17 lead with 8:29 left in the first half. From that point, the Huskies ramped up their intensity on both sides of the ball as an and-one by Lee Marks III capped off an 11-0 run for SCSU over the next three minutes. Now holding a seven-point lead, the Huskies remained in control as their defense allowed only one made field goal by the Marauders over the final 8:29 of the half as it came with 21 seconds left in the half. St. Cloud State would ultimately go into halftime leading 36-31.
The start of the second half saw the SCSU maintain their first half lead but were unable to shake the Marauders. A three-pointer by Marks III extended the lead to 10 points. Back-to-back threes by Kynan Philippe would give St. Cloud State a 55-41 lead at the 12:28 mark of the second half. SCSU kept pouring it on UMary as Lucas Morgan capped off a personal 6-0 run with a three-pointer which put the Huskies up 68-44. St. Cloud State ultimately led by 24+ points the remainder of the game as they went on to comfortably win 84-54. It was a three-point barrage in the second half for the Huskies as they made nine of their 15 attempts from beyond the arc.

Scouting Minot State
The Minot State Beavers come into this game holding an 8-6 record with a 5-3 mark in the NSIC. They are tied for second in the North Division with wins against Jamestown, Northern State, Minnesota Crookston, Bemidji State, and UMary. The Beavers are coming off their best season in program history where they tallied a 26-10 record and a 14-8 conference record. Minot State battled to the NSIC Championship game where they would be defeated by MSU Moorhead. The Beavers still reached the NCAA Tournament where their season would end following an 83-71 loss to Concordia-St. Paul. Coming into this season, MSU was projected to finish 11th in the NSIC.
The offseason saw a lot of turnover for the Beavers as they lost 11 players from last season along with their Head Coach Matt Murken. Most notably of those 11 players, First Team All-NSIC and All-American performer Caleb Van De Griend transferred to Idaho State.
Through 14 games, four Beavers are scoring in double figures with Deuce Benjamin leading the way with 20.4 points per game. Benjamin transferred from New Mexico Junior College and is shooting 44.6% from the field and 39.8% from three. The other Beavers exceeding 10+ points include Sean De Kovachich (15.2), Darik Dissette (13.8), and Isaiah Alexander (11.2).
Head Coach Randall Herbst enters his first season with Minot State in 2025-26. Herbst had spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at North Dakota before returning to Minot State where he was an assistant coach for two seasons. He also had previous stops at UMary and Waldordf where he was a Head Coach and Nebraska-Omaha where he was the top assistant.

The University of Mary Maruaders come into this game holding a 5-9 record with a 3-5 mark in the NSIC. Their three wins have come against Minot State, Minnesota Crookston, and MSU Moorhead. The Marauders are coming off a 2024-25 season where they tallied a 5-26 record and finished 14th with a 3-19 NSIC record. Coming into this season, UMary was projected to finish last in the NSIC.
Through 14 games, two Marauders score in double figures in Kelton Coleman and Cayden Redfield. Coleman leads the team with 12.7 points per game as well as steals with 2.4. Redfield is scoring 10.4 points while shooting 52.5% from the field and 43.6% from three.

St. Cloud State would comfortably lead by 13+ points the rest of the way as they stepped up defensively in the second half. UMary scored 20 points on 7/27 shooting in the second half as SCSU picked up their second straight win with a 66-50 victory over the Marauders.
Top Huskies
- Lucas Morgan got it done on both ends as he scored a game-high 17 points on 6/9 shooting from the field and a perfect 5/5 from three. Morgan also grabbed five rebounds and tallied three stocks. He set a career-high with his five three-point makes.
- Luke Winkel scored 15 points on 5/9 shooting while tying his career-high in three-point makes by going 3/4 from downtown. He also dished out four assists. Winkel has scored 15+ points in three of his past four games and tallied 4+ assists in five games this season.
- Kynan Philippe was the final Husky to score in double-figures as he scored 10 points and tallied three stocks. The stocks were a career-high for Philippe as he tied his career-high in steals with two and blocked a shot. This was the seventh game this season where Philippe scored in double-figures.
Second Half Three-Point Barrage Powers Huskies Past Marauders 84-54- February 5, 2025
Through the first 10 minutes of play, the teams would be tied at 16 points apiece with neither team able to grow a lead. A 5-1 run by the Marauders gave them a 21-17 lead with 8:29 left in the first half. From that point, the Huskies ramped up their intensity on both sides of the ball as an and-one by Lee Marks III capped off an 11-0 run for SCSU over the next three minutes. Now holding a seven-point lead, the Huskies remained in control as their defense allowed only one made field goal by the Marauders over the final 8:29 of the half as it came with 21 seconds left in the half. St. Cloud State would ultimately go into halftime leading 36-31.
The start of the second half saw the SCSU maintain their first half lead but were unable to shake the Marauders. A three-pointer by Marks III extended the lead to 10 points. Back-to-back threes by Kynan Philippe would give St. Cloud State a 55-41 lead at the 12:28 mark of the second half. SCSU kept pouring it on UMary as Lucas Morgan capped off a personal 6-0 run with a three-pointer which put the Huskies up 68-44. St. Cloud State ultimately led by 24+ points the remainder of the game as they went on to comfortably win 84-54. It was a three-point barrage in the second half for the Huskies as they made nine of their 15 attempts from beyond the arc.
Top Huskies
- Kynan Philippe scored 14 points on 5/8 shooting and made four of his seven three-point attempts. He also totaled two rebounds and two steals. His four three-point makes tied his career-high. This was Philippe's ninth game this season with 3+ threes.
- Lee Marks III scored a career-high 13 points on an efficient 4/7 shooting while making four of his five free throw attempts. He also grabbed four rebounds. This was Marks III third game scoring 11+ points this season.
- Lucas Morgan paced the Huskies in scoring with 15 points to go with five rebounds, two assists, two three-pointers made, and a block. He also made three of his four free throw attempts. This was Morgan's sixth game scoring 15+ points. He has scored 12+ points in eight of his last nine games.
Scouting Minot State
The Minot State Beavers come into this game holding an 8-6 record with a 5-3 mark in the NSIC. They are tied for second in the North Division with wins against Jamestown, Northern State, Minnesota Crookston, Bemidji State, and UMary. The Beavers are coming off their best season in program history where they tallied a 26-10 record and a 14-8 conference record. Minot State battled to the NSIC Championship game where they would be defeated by MSU Moorhead. The Beavers still reached the NCAA Tournament where their season would end following an 83-71 loss to Concordia-St. Paul. Coming into this season, MSU was projected to finish 11th in the NSIC.
The offseason saw a lot of turnover for the Beavers as they lost 11 players from last season along with their Head Coach Matt Murken. Most notably of those 11 players, First Team All-NSIC and All-American performer Caleb Van De Griend transferred to Idaho State.
Through 14 games, four Beavers are scoring in double figures with Deuce Benjamin leading the way with 20.4 points per game. Benjamin transferred from New Mexico Junior College and is shooting 44.6% from the field and 39.8% from three. The other Beavers exceeding 10+ points include Sean De Kovachich (15.2), Darik Dissette (13.8), and Isaiah Alexander (11.2).
Head Coach Randall Herbst enters his first season with Minot State in 2025-26. Herbst had spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at North Dakota before returning to Minot State where he was an assistant coach for two seasons. He also had previous stops at UMary and Waldordf where he was a Head Coach and Nebraska-Omaha where he was the top assistant.

Scouting UMary
The University of Mary Maruaders come into this game holding a 5-9 record with a 3-5 mark in the NSIC. Their three wins have come against Minot State, Minnesota Crookston, and MSU Moorhead. The Marauders are coming off a 2024-25 season where they tallied a 5-26 record and finished 14th with a 3-19 NSIC record. Coming into this season, UMary was projected to finish last in the NSIC.
