No. 13 Huskies Look to Defend NWCA National Duals Title in Cedar Falls

SCSU opens with RV Maryville
St. Cloud, MN. – No. 13 St. Cloud State Wrestling (7-1, 4-0 NSIC) travel to Cedar Falls, IA this weekend as they look to defend their National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Nationals Duals Title from a season ago. SCSU is set to wrestle RV Maryville in the opening round at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9.

NWCA Poll
St. Cloud State enters this week ranked 13th in the latest NWCA Poll. SCSU started the year ranked eighth and currently hold three ranked wrestlers.
The individuals who are ranked for the Huskies are as follows:
157 Pounds- No. 2 Joel Jesuroga (7-0, 4-0 vs NSIC, 1-0 vs ranked), six bonus point wins (four major decisions, two tech falls)
174 Pounds- No. 14 Bryce Dagel (4-2, 2-0 vs NSIC, 0-2 vs ranked), four bonus point wins (one major decision, one tech fall, two falls)
184 Pounds- No. 4 Cole Glazier (8-0, 4-0 vs NSIC, 0-0 vs ranked), five bonus point wins (one major decision, two tech falls, two falls)

Starting at 165, Gabriel Smith put six points on the board as he defeated Luke Swanson by injury. No. 14 Bryce Dagel doubled the lead for SCSU as he came away with a fall in 1:39.
With a 12-0 lead, No. 4 Cole Glazier and Tyson Meyer strung together two tech fall victories at 184 and 197. Glazier won 17-2 in 3:28 while Meyer tacked on a 19-4 victory in 6:48.
Moving to 285, Jadon Mims battled into overtime against Stetson Davis with each wrestler tallying an escape point. Throughout the match, Mims created multiple underhook scoring chances where he pushed Davis out of bounds but was unable to capitalize. A scoreless overtime period would send the match into tiebreakers. Starting the tiebreaker on top after Davis's choice, Mims put together a stellar ride as he rode Davis for the entirety of the period. In a strong position with 30 seconds of riding time, Mims would choose neutral and shutout Davis's offense to win his bout and extend the lead to 25-0.
Going back up to 125, Ben Aranda took a 3-1 lead early in the first period against Vincent Mayberry. Following Mayberry's escape point, he would take down Aranda and then nearly pinned him but would only come away with two near fall points. Aranda stayed slippery to avoid the fall and then he turned the tables with a two-point reversal. Now in control on top, Aranda would work his way to a fall on a turk to add six points to the scoreboard for the Huskies.
At 133, Dominic Ducato would be taken down early in his match but bounced back by scoring 14 unanswered points to ultimately win 14-3. With a 35-0 lead at 141, Jayce Luna came away with a 6-0 shutout over Jordon Oehme. Luna had a strong ride in the second period after starting on top. He would score four near fall points off a tilt and came away with multiple mat returns to break down Oehme's base in what was an outstanding full period ride in the victory.
Closing out the match would be Draven Johns and No. 2 Joel Jesuroga at 149 and 157. Johns made his dual debut as a true freshman and did not disappoint with a fall in 1:16 to set the score at 44-0 Huskies. Jesuroga added the final four points for SCSU as a 10-2 major decision finalized the score at 48-0 in favor of St. Cloud State.

The Field
The NWCA National Duals will feature 16 teams with 13 teams ranked in the top 25. Of those 13 teams, seven are ranked inside the top 10 including Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Kearney, Wisconsin-Parkside, Lander, Tiffin, McKendree, and Ashland.
The bracket seeded the top eight teams in the tournament. St. Cloud State was seeded fifth.

NWCA National Duals History
After capturing a title last season, St. Cloud State will be looking to defender their championship this season. The Huskies have won eight NWCA National Duals Titles (2012, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, 2025) and have finished top three in 14 consecutive years.
Last season, SCSU beat King, No. 9 Tiffin, No. 6 McKendree, and No. 4 Central Oklahoma to win the title. In the championship match, St. Cloud State trailed 16-0 after the first four matches against UCO before winning six straight matches. La'Ron Parks sealed the championship with a buzzer beating takedown.

Scouting Maryville
The Maryville Saints come into this tournament as receiving votes in the latest NWCA poll. They sit at 3-4 on the year with wins against Central Methodist, Missouri Valley, and Aurora. Their four losses have come to Missouri (D1), SIUE, No. 8 McKendree, and No. 1 Central Oklahoma.
The Saints hold two ranked wrestlers in Cole Ritter (No. 7, 174) and Jeramiah Larson (No. 9, 197). Ritter is the reigning National Champion at 174 after going 36-7 last season. Larson was a national qualifier last season and tallied a 17-13 record.
Head Coach Charlie Sherertz enters his third season with Maryville in 2025-26.
Round 2
In round two of the tournament, St. Cloud State will wrestle the winner or loser of the dual between No. 6 Lander and No. 19 UMary. That dual will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Lander holds six ranked wrestlers including James Joplin (No. 6, 133), Elijah Lusk (No. 1, 141), David Hunsberger (No. 2, 165), Dylan Kohn (No. 8, 184), Marvelous Rutledge (No. 14, 197), and Issac Sheeren (No. 13, 285).
UMary has four ranked wrestlers in Jacob Strausbagh (No. 7, 133), Sean Solis (No. 11, 141), Kaden Renner (No. 15, 157), and Luke Tweeton (No. 4 285).
