Huskies drop series finale, 4-2
MADISON, Wis. – (RV) St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (11-21-2, 7-19-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) dropped its final regular season game to No. 1 Wisconsin, 4-2, at LaBahn Arena in Madison on Sunday afternoon.
The Badgers (29-3-2, 23-3-2 WCHA) scored their first goal during their first power play of the game, 8:01 into the first period. SCSU successfully killed off two more power play opportunities in the first 20 minutes and only trailed by one at the first intermission.
Just 2:37 into the second period Wisconsin added its second goal of the game and 6:50 later its second power play goal of the game to take a 3-0 lead. SCSU went on its second power play of the day with just over two minutes left in the middle period and needed just seven seconds of the player advantage to find the back of the net, cutting its deficit to two. Junior forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) won the offensive zone faceoff, sending the puck to junior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) on the left side of the dot. Sauriol passed the puck back to graduate defender Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn.) at the left point and she sent a D-to-D pass to freshman defender Sydney Lamb (Lombard, Ill.) who took a shot from the right point through traffic and a screen from freshman forward Julianne Labbé (Wendake, Qubec) that beat the Badger netminder.
Wisconsin extended its lead back to three goals 2:44 into the third period with an even strength goal. Ten minutes later, the Huskies found the back of the net on their second straight power play. With 32 seconds left on the power play, the Huskies completed a change and sophomore defender Siiri Yrjölä (Vantaa, Finland) sent a breakout pass ahead through the neutral zone to Sauriol who skated to the goal line before passing the puck through the crease to Sundelin who scored from just below the right dot.
The Huskies pulled their goalie with 2:50 left and despite not allowing an empty netter, were only able to put one shot on net, making the final score 4-2.
