Tom Nelson joined the staff at St. Cloud State University as assistant athletic media relations director in 1996.
In 2015, Nelson was named the Interim Athletic Media Relations Director and in 2017 he was named the Assistant Athletics Director of Strategic Communications.
A 1983 graduate of North Central College in Naperville, Ill., Nelson serves as the University's men's hockey contact and also coordinates the athletic web site at SCSU. Nelson previously worked at Aurora University and St. John's University (Minn.) before making the move to St. Cloud State.
An active member of CoSIDA, Nelson received the association's CoSIDA Achievement Award in 2015. He has served as a media coordinator at numerous USA Hockey Player Development Camps and has been the media stewart for the MSHSL Class AA baseball tournament since 1997.
He also serves as the Central Region coordinator for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Â He was recognized as the Small College Wrestling SID of the Year in 2014 for his work with the Huskies' wrestling program.
His hobbies include expanding his collection of state highway maps and salt and pepper shakers, obsessively working on a map of United States quarters, and photobombing as many interviews as he can. Â Nelson resides in St. Cloud with his wife Colleen and they have two children Lauren and Patrick.
