Cory Portner serves as the University's Director of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Portner replaces Joe Meierhofer, who retired in 2017 after serving as the facility's director since the building was opened in 1989-90.

The appointment marks a homecoming for Portner, who attended St. Cloud State University and was a former student Zamboni driver at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center from 1998 to 2000.

Portner most recently worked as a Regional Operations Manager for Rink Management Services Corporation, a Virginia based company. Rink Management Services Corporation is the largest operator of ice rinks in the United States.
Portner was employed with the U.S. Ice Rink Association from 2007 to 2016. He served as the Membership and Training Director and was a lead instructor for the Certified Ice Technician training program with the U.S. Ice Rink Association and was involved with the coordination of the North American Rink Conference and Expo, the industry's largest annual exposition and educational event for ice rink professionals.

From 2002 to 2007, Portner worked as the Director of Operations at the Mid-American Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa – a multipurpose ice arena and convention center. Â

As a college student at St. Cloud State, Portner worked as a student Zamboni driver and served as a student facility manager responsible for nightly and weekend operations of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. In addition, Portner worked during his college career as a Zamboni driver at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud State. He went on to receive his degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2001.

Portner began his career as a facility manager at the Lincoln Stars Hockey's Ice Box arena in Lincoln, Neb. From 1996 to 1998.
