Matt Bertram

Matt Bertram begins his seventh season on the St. Cloud State staff and serves as the Director of Player Development. He previously served as the volunteer goaltender coach from 2018-23. Bertram has been a vital member of the Husky staff during his time in St. Cloud, helping mentor the all-time winningest goalie in program history and helping lead St. Cloud State to four NCAA Tournament appearances.

With Bertram on staff, the Huskies have reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023), headlined by an NCAA runner-up appearance at the 2021 NCAA Frozen Four. Bertram mentored David Hrenak, the most decorated goalie in program history, as Hrenak closed his SCSU career ranked first in games played (146), wins (82) and shutouts (14), second in saves (3,370), fourth in GAA (2.40) and ninth in save percentage (.910). Hrenak earned NCHC Second Team honors in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

In 2022-23, the dynamic duo of Dominic Basse and Jaxon Castor led the Huskies to a fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and an NCHC Frozen Faceoff championship. Castor was named to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff All-Tournament Team and recorded the first program’s first shutout in an NCAA Tournament game, a 4-0 win over Minnesota State which sent the Huskies to its sixth NCAA regional championship game.

A resident of Edina, Minn., Bertram previously served as an assistant coach and goaltenders coach at Eden Prairie High School in Eden Prairie, Minn. for 18 years. A 1995 graduate of Saint John's University, Bertram played two seasons of hockey at the University of Vermont before finishing his degree at SJU. A 1989 graduate of Edina High School, Bertram played high school hockey at Edina High School and earned All-State honors in his senior season.

Bertram is the president of Fields Manufacturing, a promotional products company headquartered in St. Cloud, Minn. He and his wife Kelly have three children.
