Sean Holmes enters his sixth season at the helm of St. Cloud State Men's Soccer and 27th season overall as a collegiate head coach in 2025.
2024 saw Holmes and the Huskies produce their best season in program history after tripling their win total from 2023. St. Cloud State tallied a 9-8-1 record with a 6-5-1 conference record. Highlighted by a seven-game winning streak from September 13 to October 4, the Huskies earned their first ever national ranking on October 8 as they were ranked 13th via the United Soccer Coaches Poll. Under Holmes' guidance, St. Cloud State was an offensive machine as they led the conference in total points (113), goals (32), and assists (49). SCSU reached the postseason for the third consecutive season and hosted their second straight home playoff game. Holmes would go on to win GLIAC Coach of the Year and coach four All-GLIAC honorees in Philip Caputo (First Team), Noah Eklund (Second Team), Nolan Pratumwon (Second Team), and Andrew Holmes (Honorable Mention). Caputo would also be named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year and go on to win Midwest Region Player of the Year (First Team), and ultimately be named the programs first All-American.
In 2022, the Huskies qualified for their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament and after posting its best conference record in program history, the Huskies hosted its first GLIAC Tournament game in 2023.
Holmes first official season on the field was 2021 since the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Holmes had three athletes earn All-GLIAC awards and ten earn GLIAC academic honors.
Before becoming the first head coach of the SCSU men's soccer program, Holmes served as the head varsity boys soccer coach at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa and coached with the West Des Moines Soccer Club and Sporting Iowa.
Prior to his time at Roosevelt, Holmes served as the head soccer coach at Drake University from 1998 to 2015. His teams at Drake consistently advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference playoffs, won the MVC championship in 2009, advanced to the NCAA Division I Elite Eight that same season and won 141 games in 17 seasons.
Prior to his time at Drake, Holmes was an assistant coach at the University of Evansville from 1994 to 1997 and was the head soccer coach at Baker University, where he charted a 70-28-3 record from 1989 to 1993. Holmes helped Baker win three conference titles and three district titles in five years and he was named a district/conference coach of the year four times at Baker.
A graduate of Carleton University (Ottawa, Ontario), Holmes received his master's degree from the University of Kansas and holds a U.S. Soccer Federation "A" level coaching license. In addition to his collegiate soccer experience, Holmes has worked with the Region II Olympic Development Program and the Kansas Olympic Development Program along with serving as a MLS scout for the Minnesota United FC.
He played college soccer at Carleton University, where he served as a team captain and earned All-Ontario honors. Holmes later played professional soccer in the Canadian Soccer League for the National Capital Pioneers.
