St. Cloud State Men’s Soccer to Conclude Non-Conference Play At Husky Stadium

Huskies will host Jamestown and UI-Springfield
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (1-2-0) will host their first home game of 2026 at Husky Stadium on Wednesday, September 9th against the University of Jamestown Jimmies (0-1-3). The Huskies will then host the University of Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars (0-2-1) on Saturday, September 12th.

Last Time Out
The Huskies are coming off last Wednesday's battle against the Division I, University of St. Thomas Tommies.
The Tommies, Owen Marshall, got things started for UST off the feed from Oliver Corris in the 12th minute to put the Tommies ahead 1-0. The Huskies, Johan Lopez, had a nice chance in the 1st half but couldn't convert the scoring opportunity. Both teams would battle for possession for the remainder of the half, and each squad would head into halftime with the score remaining 1-0 Tommies. In the 2nd half, Jacob Nokken scored all alone in the 75th minute to extend the Tommies lead 2-0. Jovan Koceski challenged the Tommie keeper in the final minutes but was stopped to keep the Huskies scoreless. The Huskies challenged the Tommies numerous times, with lots of good chances, and stellar play from multiple players.

Series History Against Jamestown
Wednesday's game will be the third meeting between the Jimmies and the Huskies with the all-time record between the two teams at 2-0-0. The Huskies were victorious against the Jimmies in their last meeting just a season ago.
The potent Huskies offense came out firing in the first half, producing nine shots with eight landing on goal. St. Cloud State produced multiple great scoring opportunities, but Jamestown goalkeeper Dawid Chrobot came away with some key saves to keep the score tied 0-0 for most of the first half. Right before halftime on a throw-in, Owen Worsdell delivered a great pass into the box. Chrobot knocked the ball into the air. Another Jamestown player headed it after apex which went right in front of the goal. Flying in came freshman Yousif Atia who smashed the ball into the meshing with his head as SCSU took a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute. That score held up for the final minute of the half as St. Cloud State went into the break leading 1-0.
Coming out of halftime, the offense for SCSU stayed aggressive as they applied pressure onto the Jamestown defense. Following a defensive misplay by the Jimmies, Drew Macoritti found a streaking Andrés García down the middle of the field with only the keeper to beat. The Jamestown keeper came out to challenge García, but he flew right by him and saucered a shot into the back of the net, extending the Huskies lead to 2-0 in the 68th. The defense of St. Cloud State played a stout game all evening with the Jimmies only tallying two shots on goal which led to the score holding firm for another 20 minutes. With time ticking away, the Huskies generated another scoring opportunity to tack on a third goal. Macoritti fired a beautiful pass near the box to Atia. Looking to make a move, the ball was knocked away but found its way to Miklo Jones coming from the right wing. Jones blasted a shot that would be blocked but ricocheted to King Dwumah Acheampong right in front of the net. Dwumah Acheampong bolted a shot past the keeper to put the Huskies up 3-0 in the 88th minute. St. Cloud State locked down the Jimmies in the final two minutes to come away with their second win of the season.
Scouting Jamestown
The Jimmies come into this game with a 0-1-3 record through four games. In their last match-up on September 5th, the Jimmies fell to Westminster University 4-0. The Jimmies had a 3-9-0 record last season. This is just Jamestown's second year involved in Division II athletics, their men's soccer team will join the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) in the 2027/28 season.
Through four games, Freshman, Nuutti Norhomaa leads the team in points with 3, assists with 1, and shots on goal with 2. There are four players on the Jimmies roster tied for most goals on the team with 1. Junior, Valon Ismaili is the primary goalkeeper for the Jimmies, starting all four games with a 2.00 goals against average, 38 saves, a 0.826 save percentage, and a 0-1-3 record.
The Jimmies are coached by Justin Gilfert, who's in his first season with the team. Gilfert joins the Jimmies after spending the past three seasons as the head coach at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. Prior to joining Adams State, Gilfert spent the early part of 2022 as the head men's and women's soccer coach and international liaison for Southwest Virginia Community College after serving as the men's assistant coach at Emory and Henry College, where he helped them make their transition from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II.
Series History against UI-Springfield
Saturday's game will be just the second meeting in history between the Huskies and Prairie Stars, with the Huskies winning the lone match-up in 2024, 3-2.
St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (8-7-0, 5-5-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) snapped their five-game losing streak Sunday afternoon as they took down Illinois Springfield 3-2. The Huskies got on the board quickly as Eduardo Balduino got the party started in the 11th minute as he knocked in the first goal of the game off assists from Yuken Harmon and Philip Caputo. The 1-0 lead for the Huskies did not last long as the Prairie Stars tied the game up in the 16th minute with a goal by Kevin Herrera. The teams battled for the next 20 minutes before Owen Worsdell dribbled the ball into ISU territory where he found Owen Wasmund who broke the tie with a strike off his right foot. The Huskies held that lead for the remainder of the half as they went into the break leading 2-1. The second half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to find the back of the net through the first 25 minutes. The Prairie Stars tied the game at the 71-minute mark as Kevin Herrera scored his second goal of the game. The Huskies responded moments later as Balduino secured a misplay by ISU. Balduino dished the ball to Worsdell who then found Philip Caputo deep in the box where he scorched the ball past the ISU keeper to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead in the 76th minute. St. Cloud State ramped up their stout defense as they held the Prairie Stars scoreless to secure their 8th win of the season, snapping their five-game losing streak.
Scouting UI-Springfield
The Prairie Stars come into this game with a 0-2-1 record through three games. In their last matchup on September 5th, UI-Springfield drew a tie to Lincoln in a scoreless 0-0 game. The Prairie Stars participate in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and currently rank 9th in the conference standings. UI-Springfield held a 2-10-3 record last season.
Sophomore, Gentil Selemani is the team leader in points (2) and goals (1). Selemani has just one shot on goal this season which converted for the team's only goal so far in 2026. Kevin Kardel is the Prairie Stars primary goalkeeper. Through three starts he has a 2.00 goals against average, 17 saves, a 0.739 save percentage, one shutout, and a 0-2-1 record.
The Prairie Stars are coached by Graham Shaw who's in his third season with the team. Coach Shaw led the Stars to a GLVC tournament berth in his first year with the program. The postseason berth proved the Stars are ready to be successful under Coach Shaw's direction. Some highlights of Coach Shaw's first season included a 5-game unbeaten streak, while also racking up a 3-game winning streak over that stretch. Shaw came to Springfield from Marquette University where he was the Assistant Men's Soccer Coach.
