Women's Hockey Tops Northeastern Saturday, 3-2

Vail, Colo. – The St. Cloud State women's hockey team ended their two-game non-conference play in the Rockies Saturday afternoon taking on Northeastern University. St. Cloud topped Northeastern with a final score of 3-2.
Coming off a tough game Friday in Vail, St. Cloud got on the board early with a power-play goal by Cari Coen at the 4:16 mark of the first period. Charting the assists on the goal was Audrey Hanmer and Amy Olson.
Northeastern would come back though to tie the game up at the 11:43 mark of the first as Hayley Masters made it a 1-1 game.
The Huskies were back on the power-play later in the period and found the way to capitalize as Skye Kelly fired a shot from the left faceoff circle taking a 2-1 lead at the 14:29 mark. This was Kelly's first goal of the season. Assisting on the goal was Michelle Burke and Abby Ness.
SCSU finished the first period going two-for-two on the power-play and outshot NU 10-6.
At the 8:19 mark of the second Northeastern would again tie the game up 2-2 on an even-strength goal by Kelly Wallace.
St. Cloud was not going to end their time in Vail without a win as senior Julia Gilbert found the back of the net shooting right between the faceoff circles off a pass from Michelle Burke. The Huskies goal made it a 3-2 game at the 11:46 mark of the second.
The Huskies held Northeastern to only five shots on goal in the third period to earn a 3-2 victory. In goal for St. Cloud was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald recording 25 saves for her first victory of the season. Fitzgerald moves her record to 1-3-1 with the win.
SCSU ended the game going two-for-two on the power-play while NU finished zero-for-two. Shots on goal ended with St. Cloud outshooting Northeastern 29-27.
St. Cloud State (2-9-3, 1-7-2-1 WCHA) will take a week off now and come back to start their eight game home stint as they play host to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Nov. 29-30. Game times are set for 3:07 p.m. starts both days at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
