Women's Hockey Kicks off Eight Straight at Home, Nov. 29-30

St. Cloud, Minn. -Â St. Cloud State women's hockey were off last week and are ready to get back after it as they kick off an eight game home stint playing host to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Nov. 29-30. Game times are set for 3:07 p.m. starts both days at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
THE RECORD: The Huskies comes into this weekend's final non-conference series holding a 2-9-3 overall record and a 1-7-2-1 record in the WCHA, which puts them tied for seventh place in the conference.
LAST TIME OUT: St. Cloud State was in the Rockies for the Vail Tournament on Nov. 15-16. The Huskies started off Friday against #8 Boston University, as they were shutout 2-0, finishing the weekend on Saturday as they topped Northeastern with a final score of 3-2. St. Cloud and BU kept the first period scoreless until the 6:04 mark as BU gained the first lead of the game 1-0 over St. Cloud and then extended their lead 2-0 in the second period. St. Cloud had many opportunities in the third period with some one-on-one situations and outshot BU 15-9, but was unable to get on the board. In goal against BU was Julie Friend recording 31 saves and saw her record move to 1-6-2 on the season. St. Cloud still leads the all-time record against Boston University, now holding a 3-1-1 record that dates back to Jan. 5, 2007. Friday in Vail, St. Cloud got on the board early with a power-play goal by Cari Coen at the 4:16 mark of the first with assists by Audrey Hanmer and Amy Olson. With the game tied up 1-1, SCSU was back on the power-play later in the period and found a way to capitalize as Skye Kelly fired a shot from the left faceoff circle taking a 2-1 lead at the 14:29 mark. This was Kelly's first goal of the season. Assisting on the goal was Michelle Burke and Abby Ness. St. Cloud's Julia Gilbert found the back of the net shooting right between the faceoff circles off a pass from Michelle Burke to make it a 3-2 game in the second. The Huskies held Northeastern to only five shots on goal in the third period to earn a 3-2 victory in Vail. Sophomore Katie Fitzgerald was in goal for SCSU recording 25 saves and her first victory of the season. Fitzgerald moves her record to 1-3-1 with the win. SCSU ended the game going two-for-two on the power-play and outshot Northeastern 29-27. This was only the second time the teams have met to have the all-time record tied 1-1-0. The first meeting of the teams came back on Jan. 2, 2011.

Leaders: Leading the Engineers are Junior Taylor Mahoney (4g, 3a) and freshman Laura Horwood (3g, 4a) with seven points apiece. Junior Ali Svoboda (2g, 4a), senior captain Jordan Smelker (1g, 5a) and freshman Katie Rooney (1g, 5a) all have six points.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS: The Huskies and the Engineers have only met one other time, which came on Jan. 3, 2009 at the Easton Holiday Showcase hosted by St. Cloud. The Engineers shutout the Huskies 2-0, starting their all-time series.
IN THE NET: In goal for the Huskies they have been fortunate enough to have two solid goalies to share the time between the pipes. Junior Julie Friend has played in nine of the Huskies 14 games recording 337 saves and allowing 24 goals for a season record of 1-6-2. Sophomore Katie Fitzgerald has posted six starts in goal earning 179 saves and has allowed 17 goals for a 1-3-1 record.
LEADING THE HUSKIES: St. Cloud's senior Molli Mott leads the team with 10 points in 14 games played for the Huskies. Mott has tallied four goals and six assists on the season. Closely following is senior Julia Gilbert with nine points, including five goals and four assists.
FRESHMEN NUMBERS: This years freshmen have been playing a significant amount of time for the Huskies with six of them earning time in the lines. Together they have recorded two goals and three assists with Lauren Hespenheide and Payge Pena earning their first collegiate goals. Kelsey Saelens has also recorded her first collegiate points with two assists so far this season and Hespenheide with the third assist.
AT HOME: In the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center the Huskies are 0-5-1 on the season earning their sole tie on Oct. 4 against Quinnipiac University 0-0 in overtime. With eight straight now at home the Huskies are looking to get some wins at home to improve their overall record and starting next weekend their WCHA record.
ON THE ROAD: Currently the Huskies hold a 2-4-2 record on the road, earning wins over Minnesota Duluth and Northeastern University. St. Cloud has totaled 13 goals, including four on power-play opportunities and one short-handed goal.
