Women's Hockey Set to Host Minnesota State Dec. 6-7

St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State continues an eight game home stand this weekend on Dec. 6-7 as they welcome Minnesota State to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center for a WCHA series. The puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. respectively.
THE RECORD: The Huskies hold a 2-11-3 overall record and a 1-7-2-1 record good for six points, in the ever-grueling WCHA coming into their series against Minnesota State. St. Cloud sits tied for seventh with Minnesota State currently in the conference standings.
LAST TIME OUT: St. Cloud State was back in action this past weekend kicking off an eight game home stand playing host to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. RPI took both games against the Huskies for the sweep, winning 4-1 and 2-1. The Huskies came back in the second with some tenacity outshooting RPI once again 15-2 but still trailed 1-0. SCSU found themselves with a two-point deficit in the third period before coming back making it a 2-1 game on a power-play goal by freshman Payge Pena with assists going to freshman Kelsey Saelens and senior Julia Gilbert. St. Cloud could not hold on as they gave up two more goals to RPI to end the game. Starting in goal for St. Cloud was junior Julie Friend as she recorded 17 saves. The Huskies ended the game outshooting RPI 45-21 and went 1-for-5 on the power-play. Rounding out their final non-conference series of the season against Rensselaer Saturday afternoon, the Huskies comeback fell short as Rensselaer earned the sweep with a 2-1 victory. After the first period on Saturday, the Huskies once again found themselves with a two-point deficit as RPI capitalized on back-to-back power-play goals by the halfway point of the first period, leading 2-0. St. Cloud was outshooting Rensselaer 21-12 after the second period as they trailed 2-0. The Huskies were able to start a comeback at the 4:54 mark of the third period as Molli Mott fired a shot from right in front of the net, scoring a shorthanded goal to make it a 2-1 game. Mott was assisted by senior teammates Julia Gilbert and Cari Coen. This was the second shorthanded goal for the Huskies this season. Cari Coen scored the first one at Ohio State on Oct. 11 in the Huskies 2-2 overtime tie. St. Cloud had many other opportunities in the third period but was unable to get any past the RPI goalie. Earning the start in goal Saturday for St. Cloud was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald as she recorded 18 saves. Fitzgerald moves her record to 1-4-1 on the season. The Huskies finished the game outshooting RPI, 32-20.

Leaders: Leading the Mavericks is Kathleen Rogan with 12 points including seven goals and five assists in 14 games played. Out of Rogan's seven goals five of which are power-play goals. Closely following with 10 points each in 14 games as well are Kari Lundberg (5g, 5a) and Nicole Germaine (4g, 6a). The three of them combined have put up 153 shots on goal. In the net for MSU has been Danielle Butters starting in all 14 games recording 822:12 minutes and a 5-9-0 record. Butters has tallied 449 (91.6%) saves and allowed 41 goals between the pipes this season for a 2.99 goal against average.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS: The Huskies and the Mavericks met four times during the 2012-13 season for SCSU to go 2-1-1 over MSU. The latest meeting came in Mankato on Feb. 15-16, tying game one 2-2 with the Huskies winning the shootout and in game two St. Cloud shutout the Mavericks 2-0. Earlier in the season the teams split the series in St. Cloud as the Huskies fell 2-1 and prevailed in game two 5-2.
BETWEEN THE PIPES: In goal for the Huskies they have been fortunate enough to have two starting goalies to share the time between the pipes. Junior Julie Friend has played in 10 of the Huskies 16 games recording 354 saves and holds a 2.78 goal against average for a season record of 1-7-2. Sophomore Katie Fitzgerald has posted seven starts, earning 197 saves, a 2.96 goal against average, for a 1-4-1 record. Together they hold a .921 save percentage and a 2.89 goal against average. Friend and Fitzgerald are ranked 26th and 27th respectively nationally for GAA. Friend is also ranked 13th nationally in save percentage (92.9%).
LEADING THE HUSKIES: Seniors Molli Mott and Julia Gilbert are leading the Huskies with 11 points each with both playing in 16 games. Mott and Gilbert have both recorded five goals and six assists on the season.
FRESHMEN NUMBERS: This year's freshmen have been playing a significant amount of time for the Huskies with six of them earning time in the lines. Together they have recorded three goals, four assists, and a total 53 shots on goal. Lauren Hespenheide posted her first collegiate goal against Minnesota on Nov. 9 to almost beat the Gophers. Payge Pena recorded the other two goals for the freshmen earning hers against Minnesota on Nov. 8 and against RPI on Nov. 29. Kelsey Saelens has also recorded her first collegiate points with three assists so far this season and Hespenheide with one as well.
AT HOME: In the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center the Huskies are 0-7-1 on the season earning their sole tie on Oct. 4 against Quinnipiac University 0-0 in overtime. Starting back up WCHA play and having six straight games at home now, the Huskies are looking to get a win streak going to improve their overall and conference record.
SCSU STRENGTHS: SCSU's penalty-kill has proven effective so far this season 81.2% (56/69) of the time. The Huskies have outshot their opponent in the last three straight games 106-68. Currently the Huskies hold a 2-4-2 record on the road, earning wins over Minnesota Duluth and Northeastern University. St. Cloud has totaled 13 goals, including four on power-play opportunities and one short-handed.
