St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State women's hockey was in the comforts of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center again Friday night as they hosted rival Minnesota State. The Huskies skated to their first victory at home rolling over the Mavericks, 6-2.
With WCHA rivals going head-to-head the first period came with a great deal of action on both sides of the ice. The Huskies found themselves behind early with a quick goal by the Mavericks' Kathleen Rogan for a 1-0 lead.
St. Cloud shook it off to come back just :49 seconds later at the 4:44 mark of the first as senior forward Molli Mott found the back of the net for the power-play goal. Mott scored unassisted just five seconds into the Huskies power-play.
Junior Kalli Funk would get a goal called off after a quick whistle blown before it passed the line but came back to bury a wrist shot from the slot to take to a 2-1 lead at the 14:53 mark of the first period. Assists on the goal were charted to seniors Sydney Burghardt and Cari Coen. This was Funk's first goal of the season as well.
Late in the first period the Huskies extended their lead 3-1 over the Mavericks as Amanda Arbogast got her first goal of the season. Arbogast fired a shot from the left faceoff circle into the top right corner of the net on assists from Audrey Hanmer and Funk.
The Huskies ended the first period outshooting the Mavericks 15-10 and went one-for-two on the power-play.
Mankato cut the Huskies lead to 3-2 just 1:01 into the second period on an unassisted goal by Melissa Klippenstein. The rest of the period brought great defensive stops by both teams as St. Cloud held onto a 3-2 lead heading into intermission.
St. Cloud came out in the third period longing for that first victory in the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center this season. Three seconds after the Huskies ended their sixth power-play opportunity, Mott once again found the net taking a 4-2 lead over Mankato at the 4:06 mark.
The Huskies continued to increase their lead scoring at the 5:41 mark on a goal by senior captain Amy Olson with assists going to Kelsey Saelens and Julia Gilbert. SCSU sealed their fate for 6-2 victory on a power-play goal at 7:36 by Abby Ness. Hanmer and Mott were credited with the assists.
