The St. Cloud State University baseball team (7-2, 0-0 NSIC) had an early wake-up call on Feb. 25 with a 7 a.m. twinbill at the Minneapolis Metrodome against Division I rival North Dakota.
In game one, the Huskies scored a 4-2 victory over North Dakota. In the second game of the doubleheader, North Dakota charged back to earn a 2-0 victory over the Huskies.
The Huskies gained a 2-0 lead in the third inning and then padded the lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. North Dakota scored its first run of the game in the fourth inning and it added one more run in the sixth inning.
On the mound, Scott Lieser was solid with 6.1 innings of work, seven strikeouts, nine hits allowed and two runs allowed. Chris Kubitz and Reese Gregory came in for relief with Gregory earning the save.
At the plate, Brian Hansen had two hits, two runs and a triple in the game. Sean Borman posted one hit, one RBI and one run and Garrett Fischer notched one hit and two RBIs in the contest.
"We knew going in it was going to be a pitching battle with Lieser and (UND's Andrew) Thome on the mound. They both threw great with some upper 80 mph two seamers," SCSU coach Pat Dolan said.
"We got a nice two out rally in the third with Hansen an Borman getting base hits and Fish (Fischer) getting the big two RBI hit. We again created insurance runs with Imhotle and Borman getting RBIs. It was a nice clean game defensively and a nice win against an NCAA DI team."
In game two, SCSU lost a tough pitchers' duel as Husky Kyle Fischer pitched the complete game for SCSU with two strikeouts, two runs allowed and nine hits allowed.
UND outhit the Huskies 9-4 in the contest. SCSU's Garrett Fischer had two hits in the game including a double. Imholte added a double for SCSU and the other Husky hit was charted by Zac Sather.
UND scored its two runs in the fourth inning. Jeff Campbell was the pitcher of record for UND.
"Campbell threw a gem for UND. Zero walks and we only squared up four balls all game. That's a formula for a shutout," Dolan said. "To get a split against a DI program and their top two pitchers was OK. The chance to see this type of quality pitching along with the arms we saw in Texas will help us in the long run."
