Softball Falls to Concordia, St. Paul 2-6 and 8-11

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team matched up against Concordia University, St. Paul this afternoon in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games were held on the Huskies home playing grounds at Selke Field. The doubleheader kicked off at noon.
St. Cloud State dropped both games in the doubleheader against the Golden Bears, falling 2-6 in game one and 8-11 in game two.
The Huskies are now 27-24 overall and 12-12 in the NSIC. Concordia, St. Paul now stands at 28-14 overall, 15-9 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to play on Thursday as they head to Rochester, Minn. to compete in the 2013 NSIC Softball Championships. More information regarding game time and opponent will be released soon.
Game One vs. CU Recap:
St. Cloud State was the first to score in game one as they put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third as Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa) homered to score her and Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) who had reached on a single to left. The Huskies took an early 2-0 lead but were unable to score the rest of the game.
The Golden Bears put one run on the board in the top of the fourth as two walks, one hit and a fielder's choice left them trailing 1-2. It wasn't until the seventh inning that the Golden Bears deflated the Huskies. Concordia scored five runs on no hits and one Husky error due to four walked batters, one hit by pitch and a fielder's choice. They would hold their lead in the bottom of the seventh and the Huskies would fall 2-6 in game one.
Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) had two hits in the first game in four at bats. Hogan and Grell each finished with one hit.
Overall the Huskies scored two runs on six hits and committed one error. The Golden Bears scored six runs on just three hits and committed one error.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings. Franks allowed just three hits, walked 13 batters and struck out 10. Franks now holds a 19-13 overall record on the mound this season.
Game Two vs. CU Recap:
Game two was quite the show as ten total homeruns were hit between the two teams. Concordia, St. Paul finished with four and the Huskies hit six. St. Cloud State was the first to score as Kelly Olson (Oak Grove) and Mikayla Hogan hit back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Concordia responded in the third and grabbed one run for a score of 2-1, Huskies with the lead.
The Golden Bears gained the lead for the first time in the top of the fourth as Katie Feuerbach hit a two-RBI homerun to give Concordia, St. Paul a 3-2 advantage. The Huskies battled back scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth assisted by a Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) solo homerun and a Kelly Olson three-run homer. Heading into the fifth the Huskies led 6-3.
Unfortunately, the Golden Bears didn't give up. They knocked in four more runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. The Huskies would score just two more runs, eventually falling 8-11 in game two.
The Huskies scored eight runs on 13 hits and committed no errors. Concordia, St. Paul scored 11 runs on 14 hits and committed one error.
Several Huskies finished with multiple hits in game two. Kelly Olson, Mikayla Hogan, Kelsie Fitch, Jordan Grell, and Nicole Steinle each collected two hits in today's second game. Breana Canova, Megan Lehnen and Marie Imholte each added one hit. Olson finished with a team-high four RBI's and she hit two homeruns. Hogan also homered twice today while Grell and Steinle both hit one over.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) started and pitched five innings for the Huskies. Merritt allowed seven runs, nine hits, walked two and struck out six. Merritt was relieved by Jackie Manrique (Chicago, Ill.) in the sixth. Manrique pitched two complete innings, gave up five hits and struck out one.
