Mankato, Minn. - The number five seed St. Cloud State University baseball team (36-9) posted its second consecutive victory at the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region tournament with a 2-1 win over number three seed Southern Arkansas on Friday, May 17 in Mankato, Minn.
The victory moves the Huskies into a third day meeting with top seed Minnesota State University, which will also bring a 2-0 record in Regional play into tomorrow's showdown at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato. SCSU will meet up with MSU at 1 p.m.
In the other games on May 17 at the Regional, Central Missouri eliminated Missouri Southern from Regional play with a 7-3 win in Game One. Host Minnesota State ended Missouri Western's run in tournament play with a 4-1 win in 10-innings.
The schedule for May 18 will begin with SCSU and MSU playing at 1 p.m. The game will be followed by the game between Central Missouri and Southern Arkansas. The winner of the game between Central Missouri and Southern Arkansas will then meet up with the loser of the game between SCSU and MSU in the evening game on May 18.
In a classic defensive battle, the Huskies prevailed when senior outfielder Phil Imholte drove home pinch runner Brandon Arnold in the bottom of the ninth inning to seal the win for SCSU over SAU.
SAU opened the game's scoring with one run in the second inning, which proved to be the only offense the Muleriders could generate against Husky starter Kyle Fischer.
SCSU tied the game up at 1-1 in the fifth inning with a run by senior Sean Borman. He was put into scoring position thanks to a single by Mike Jurgella and a walk by Travis Cariveau. An infielder ground ball by Steve Rindelaub allowed Borman to score SCSU's first run.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before the Huskies claimed the win with their run in the bottom of the ninth. Borman led off the inning with a walk and a bunt by Jurgella moved pinch runner Arnold to second.
A walk by Travis Cariveau put runners at first and second base, which set the table for Imholte's last inning single to right field that won the contest for SCSU.
In the game, SCSU had seven hits and SAU posted nine hits. Fischer was stellar in the contest with 10 strikeouts to his credit and after the fourth inning he only allowed one SAU player to reach third base. Fischer now owns the team record for wins in a season with 11 in 2013 (11-2).
J. Abbey started the contest for SAU and pitched 7.2 innings and allowed one run. The loss was tagged on reliever J. Thomas won pitched pitched 1.0 innings in the game.
"This was another clutch win for the Huskies," SCSU coach Pat Dolan said. "Kyle Fischer turned in another top notch performance and put us into the position to win the game in the ninth inning with Phil Imholte's big single.
"To stay in the winners' bracket in tournament play is important and to get a win against a very tough team from Southern Arkansas was huge for us tonight."
