St. Cloud, Minn. – Former St. Cloud State University basketball player Mahmoud Abdelfattah is returning to the Husky program as an assistant coach, announced today by men's head coach Kevin Schlagel.
Abdelfattah replaces Brett Putz, who was named an assistant coach at Wayne State College earlier this summer.
"Mahmoud will bring a great deal of passion and energy to our program," said Schlagel. "His primary responsibilities will be to work with our perimeter players and be in charge of junior recruiting. His experience as an AAU coach and his connections in Chicago will be a great help to expanding our recruiting base."
Abdelfattah has been a varsity assistant coach and sophomore head coach at Perspective Charter School in Chicago, Ill., since September 2011. He has been coaching the Lake Forest, Ill, 17-U AAU team since the summer of 2009. This past summer his 17-U team won the National AAU Tournament in Orlando, Fla., posting an 8-0 record.
A senior member of the 2009-10 Husky basketball team that advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, Abdelfattah was a two-year team member. He played in 35 games during that time and in 2010-11 served as a student assistant coach.
Abdelfattah attended and played basketball at Wilbur Wright College in Chicago from 2006 to 2008. He was named the team's most valuable player, region MVP, first team All-Region, second team All-American, All-Star game nominee and participant and All-Conference first team in 2008. He attended William Howard Taft High School in Chicago and was a four-year member of the varsity basketball team.
